Not sure how to approach this one since it's completely intermittent but it's been driving me nuts. I have an intermittent clunking that I can only describe as a metallic clunking/knocking that seems to come from engine bay area and seems to be SOMETIMES excited from three things:
1. Idle engine vibrations
2. Driveline loading/unloading (on/off throttle in like 1st or 2nd gear or during a cam buck)
3. Sudden small shocks to front end from imperfection on road.
Like I said, it's completely intermittent. Sometimes does it when cold, sometimes when warm, sometimes not at all during an entire drive. It only happens during just regular commuting driving. As a matter of fact, issue was non-existent during an entire HPDE weekend or every time I go for some spirited driving.
I'm pretty confident I can discard the following:
1. Torque tube couplers - less than 8k miles on them. Couplers where replaced with OEM rubber style ones along with clutch recently. I also doubt they're the couplers because it wouldn't be intermittent if they were the couplers again.
2. Sway bar end links - less than 15k on them, and they're upgraded to the Moog w/ zerk fittings for grease. I recently inspected them, retorqued and regreased them when I upgraded to C6Z sway bars.
3. Shocks - less than 5k miles on them. Upgraded to C6Z shocks and did it myself.
I've also inspected the wheels, control arms, and suspension recently and I find nothing. Wheels have very slight play; not enough to be the cause of issue IMO.
Please help me with some ideas to start discarding, before I start going with the parts cannon approach.
Without hearing it, engine/trans mount or belt tensioner
Engine/trans mounts have not been changed, I'll give you that.
Belt tensioner (and entire belt serpentine system for that matter) is relatively low miles. Replaced about 20k miles ago.
I'll try to get a video recording of the sound if that helps.

Did you get this fixed? I starting having a similar problem, maybe what you have. Sounded like drive-line lash. I removed both rear axle nuts and pulled the hubs off the axles. Cleaned up the splines and lubed them up with some brake grease. No more noise.

i still haven’t gotten to the bottom of it. I was wrong when I said it did it all the time in all conditions. It’s definitely more prominent when it’s cold.
