I would welcome any guidance here. My 2004 Coupe, a daily driver, in very condition (well until today), with 122K miles. The issue is that while the shifter moves, the automatic transmission does not engage. The Vette remains in Park. Should this help here are some other observations. When I press the brake pedal, the rear brake lights aluminate. If I do not press the brake pedal, the shifter does not move, that is as it should be. The engine starts normally. I drove the Vette yesterday, I noticed no issues. The shifter feels lighter in its movement as I go from Park downward, like it does not have the usual resistance when shifting, but that could be only my imagination. I welcome any suggestions. Thank you.
Thank you, guys. I had somewhat wondered that given the apparent lighter feel to the shifter. I drive the Vette everyday so I admit I was not sure on the feel. Given my circumstances, I need to have the towed to a service provider. There is good one here in the metro Atlanta area, but is about a 25 mile tow. I just had a the feel that it was one of those things where the part does not cost that much, the labor aspect is extensive. I do thank you for taking the time to provide the clarity to this. I do approcyate it.

Well, just to give you the remaining option...
Usually the cable is fine and is just a broken bushing at one of its ends.
Even though most probably only 1 gave up, this is a call to replace bushings at both ends.
A little dielectric grease combined with long channel-lock pliers will make things a lot easier when installing the bushings. Just get 2 pieces of cardboard or something similar and tape them over the grooves in the pliers jaws to protect things when pressing the bushings in.
This is very doable and it's just a few bucks and a couple of hours to change the bushing at both ends of the cable, taking your time
