Well, 25 pages later, the sucker is finally all typed up. For those looking to install your own heads/cam/underdrive pulley/oilpump/timing chain, or any combo of those parts yourself....this is the writeup for you!

The writeup has detailed instructions that most people that can turn a wrench can follow, and during the heads/cam install there are optional instructions to install a new oil pump, a new timing chain, a new intake manifold, or an underdrive pulley, however those parts are not required. The torque specs are pulled from the GM manuals.

Note, the writeups with the C5 logo next to them apply to the C5 cars. The ones with "fbody" next to them are of course, for fbodies (I have an ls1 fbody and a C5).

My webpage URL is: http://www.ls1howto.com/

Some interesting stats...
- The C5 writeup with all pictures, is 8.1megabytes
- There are over 50 images used in the C5 writeup
- When printed, the c5 writeup is between 22 and 29 pages long
- The information was collected over the process of 3 C5 head installs I worked on, as well as 6 fbody head swaps and 10 cam swaps total (2 ybody, 8 fbody)

NOTE: The page is a living page, and I update it every time somebody emails me with corrections or suggestions, so DON'T print pages out until the day of your install or you may miss important updates.

Great job as usual jmx, only suggestion is its probably a good idea to line up the 'dots' before the cam gear is removed - that way you can get an idea of how they look lined up. Sometimes they just look 'off' and if you know what it looks like before you remove the gear, it gives a little more confidence to someone doing it for the first time :)

Excellent write up, stuff like that takes time and its appreciated

[edit] oops, reread it and you answered my question on the abs/ah pump - need more coffee :)

I was debating whether to do the install myself or pay someone to do it. After reading your very detailed instructions, I feel much more confident about doing the install myself. Thank you very much for the effort.

Terrific job and just in time for me. A GM mechanic is doing my work and only has done this by dropping the engine. By the book. He asked me for instructions on this method last week.

jfpilla, does your GM mechanic know that you the GM manual shows that you can pull the heads/cam out with the motor in the car? That'd save you some dough.

I made the text bold, then repeated they were INCH pounds just for you. :jester

Thanks everybody for the feedback, spread the word and feel free to tell people about the site. It can only be made better if people actually use it! Don't be scared away by the length, I typed in as much detail so it ended up looking like a HUUUUUGE task when its not that big of a deal.

Interesting idea, I may add something about that to the install. Might help out a first timer.

Thanks for the info. He asked me for the instructions so it could be done more cheaply. I guess the dealer wants them to pull the moter.$$$$$. I copied this set for him and I will tell him about the manual. He is very good. He works for a good dealer and is clean and meticulous with his work. He has his own lift at his house and is pretty busy. I paid $400 for Converter, transgo, deep pan and 3.42's, to be installed and he supplied all fluids and gaskets.

excellent descriptions. I had a performance shop do mine but now I know all the hard work that went into it.
I have one question, I do have a extra Tapping Noise inside the car. When I give the gas that is when it occurs and when the clutch is pressed in the sound quits for a second. I am going back to the performance shop to get some info.
I hope it is not normal like you mentioned.
