Guys what are those metal bars for under the nose of the car? you know the ones that are low enough to scrape in parking lots if you move up too far?

Can they be replaced easily? Are they considered part of the "frame" of the car?

I had to replace mine after a road course accident bent them up pretty bade. The bars themselves are ~ $250.00, if I remember correctly. Removing and reinstalling ~ 3 - 4 hours and, you'll probably need help putting the new ones in as they also support the bottom of the radiator. You don't have to drain the coolent, the hoses will hold everything up but, the assembly will slide down a little when you remove the old bars.

I had the nose piece off for work at the same time but, I think you can get the bars out and in without removing the nose. A service manual will be a big help.

Warning the bars need to have nuts pressed into them to attach various pieces such as the air pump, horn, air dam, etc. Be sure to order the proper nuts, they're 2 sizes, if you're lucky the dealers body shop will press them in for you at no charge. Also they come unpainted, a little black rustolem worked for me. LOL

It's actually a single piece assembly with 4 mounting points, 2 on each frame rail, that are connected by the lower radiator support.

Is there some reason that this assembly cannot be made stronger such as using thicker walled tubing?

Other then weight / cost? You'd have to ask the C5 design team.

why?

you're not supposed to hit stuff with them. :D

I replaced mine when I first got my car, the left front was bent back so badly that it ripped itself from the frame.
I think I paid around $125.00 for mine, I found out about the compression nuts AFTER I had mounted it to the car.
I took it off again and got the nuts from the dealer, I didn't have a tool to compress them, so I figured out my own method.
pretty easy install after the compression nuts are in.
