Default Question about the dreaded1416 code

I checked my codes the other day and had the 1416 HC code show up but no Check Engine Light. Is that normal? I am going to try the spray treatment before replacing the check valve. Thoughts? Oh yea 2003 AE coupe, automatic.

Just did mine yesterday with the spray treatment. I was getting the P1416 a couple of times a month with a check engine light. Went for a ride about 60 miles afterwards and no code. A bit early to tell if it's cured, but beats tearing into it. Took all of 15 minutes to apply.

Takes an hour to pull the intake and change the valve and put it back together, While in there you might want to look into the oil pressure sender also.

There is quite a bit in search about the P1416 code, most probably a sticking or malfunctioning alternate air check valve, here is one, note Bill Curlee's comments on the diaphragm getting stiff or brittle:

Some have sprayed various cleaners into the passenger side valve and have gotten good but maybe not long term relief.

From my perspective, the best solution is to relocate the passenger side valve to a location similar to the driver side valve. See search P 1416-

I got the P1415 code about a week after I got the car. Pretty sure I sprayed WD40 in there (dont quote me on that, please do your due diligence). About 12k miles later and the code still hasn't returned.

Try the cleaning method; can't hurt. Disconnect the pipe from the engine so you don't flush WD-40/ other cleaning agent through the CAT/ 02 Sensors. My car has 73K miles and the cleaning did not work for me. I ended up replacing the valve and after taking a look at it, it was absolutely caked with rusty crud beyond cleaning.

OK - I tried the cleaning method. Next day on a longer ride - check engine light returns. Bit the bullet and ordered up two check valves, oil pressure sender, and gasket sets. took about 5 hours total to pull intake , clean everything, and R&R parts. Observations - Drivers side check valve working but crusty inside. Passenger side check valve totally seized. No chance any amount cleaning short of explosives was going to open that valve. Intake valley was filthy. Can't imagine how or why this was so bad. Inside intake, very little oil misting, cleaned out nice. No deposits on injectors. Throttle body pulled and cleaned, wasn't too bad at all. Started right up and idled smoothly. No codes after 250 miles.
This is not the easiest job, but mostly ackward getting access to the #2 check valve. It took me the 5 hours over 3 days as I have a fused back and bending over can get to be painful quickly.
Lesson learned that for the P1416 code, replacement is the only permanent fix.
Stay safe - Tom
