I'm in the process of researching the changes to my engine in prep. for a supercharger install sometime this coming year.
I want to lower the compression in my LS1 by using different pistons/rings to create a larger volume in my combustion chamber without changing heads (other than ported LS1 heads).
A different cam with longer duration on intake and exhaust valve openings is also part of my plans.
This is of course to increase the benefit of the SC.
I've heard that some of you use Ross Racing Pistons.
What other Piston manufacturers do you recommend? Lunati?
Re: Different Pistons for lower compression... (Tiger Shark)
Here is the job card # for the Ross Forged "dished" pistons I am using.
J.C.: 72906
Just call Ross. Also these pistons are designed for a 6.125 rod not a 6.100 if you want them to be stock LS1/LS6 then tell them so they can make it that way. I wanted to use the longer rod..the same that the strokers use. They can also make the same piston type bigger..like if you want it .005 or .010 bigger so that you can hone out your block..The JC # I listed is for a stock replacement..just a deglaze and clean up on the block.
Re: Different Pistons for lower compression... (Tiger Shark)
JE Pistons has a new line of LS1 pistons that are being released in the next couple of weeks. I received a set a few weeks ago that where the first set off the press. They are a brand new casting that is available mainly for a 4.000" bore and bigger but JE say's they will stock "dished" sizes as well.
It is a real light piston and uses a 2.350" pin which also saves in weight. The other nice thing is that when using a lot of stroke you don't need to notch the skirt on cylinder #7 to clear the reluctor wheel/
DIAMOND also carries LS1 pistons in stock bore sizes with a few dishes.
Re: Different Pistons for lower compression... (9D9LS1)
I looked at JE, which are very good pistons too. But Ross is proven as well and they are made locally in California...plus nobody else had a set anywhere..all were 3-4 weeks out..nobody has stocked any so far..so maybe JE will be first to do so. Ross makes pistons per order and request, when they receive the order.
I don't know about the longer stroke statement. I went with a 6.125 rod which is the stroker rod..because I felt since I was rebuilding I might as well buy a set of rods I could use if I ever decided to do a stroker. I know that the piston..It is Piston #8 that needs to be notched for the reluctor ring..I was looking at it in the block the other day. It is the last piston on the crank.
I don't know what grams the JE's are but the Ross piston weight is 467 grams. If you are going to make comparisons you should look at specs, and ask professionals opinions. I have rebuilt engines but I am not a professional engine builder. But the information I am presenting here is all off the Spec sheets that came with the Ross pistons.
