Default Evap leak - PO442

Hi,

My 02' c5z has this code. It's the only code that is currently showing up. I did the easiest thing and replaced the gas cap (purchased from Amazon). I installed the new cap, drove the car for a few days, and the code went away for like 2-3 weeks ( I was daily driving then).
The check engine light came back on with the same code. I checked the fuel cap and noticed that it was loose (no matter how many turns I did to tighten; 3-5 clicks) when turning counterclockwise, like it wasn't on tight. It didn't feel right so I went to my local autozone and purchased another fuel cap just in case I needed to return. This cap feels like it closes better and it's not so loose when turning counterclockwise when I'm filling up with gas. The light remains and it doesn't go away (it's been 2 months).

I'm just wondering if there is any value in adding plastic wrap (saran wrap) before twisting the fuel cap on to keep fumes from escaping if indeed it's a fuel cap issue. Any other ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Would be best to buy a new OEM cap and be done with it...I’d see if you can get one from the dealer and it shouldn’t break the bank...ROCK auto is another supplier I use and have been happy with their parts...just stay away from EBay !!
