Gonna be purchasing a LS6 intake soon and want to install headers too. Will the shorties give me just as much power?I just want to stick to the "bolt ons";no internal stuff :D
I went with the TPIS Long Tube Headers and Borla XR1 Exhaust.  It gave me an additional boost in HP and a deeper meaner sound without having to go internally in to the Engine (though that is on this list).
If you want to add Mods without getting in the Engine then you definitely want to do a cold air intake, LS6 Intake and LT Headers. The easier the engine can breathe and get rid of exhaust - the more power you can potentially make. A key to success with all of this is "Tuning".
Now, specifically the bonus that LT Headers have over Shorty's is that the pre-cats are removed. This means additional power.
Also, if you ever plan (or think of planning) on adding a SC, Blower, H&C or NOS then you will benefit more with LT Headers than with a shorty set.
This is about the extent of my knowledge on this... Hopefully a Tuner will chime in and give you some good advice.
First off, how dare you post a torch red 99 FRC with Z06 wheels! Don't know how badly I crave those wheels.
Anyway, nice Vette. Vast majority of the people here will tell you go with the Long-tubes. Maybe a little more of a hassle to install, but well worth the effort. I've got cermic coated B&B Shorties. They where on the car when I bought it. But, if I had to buy headers for my car, I'd go with LTs.
I'm looking at getting a set of long tube headers. From what I can understand, the shorty headers allow you to keep the rest of the exhaust plumbing stock. With lt headers, you'll need fit-up pieces to make the rest of the exhaust system work.
Shorty headers may give you as much as 5 RWHP but long tube headers will definitely give you in the neighborhood of 15-20+ RWHP and MORE importantly - you'll get 20 or more RWTQ for that quick acceleration.
Assuming you do the install yourself, a set of SS or ceramic coated shorty headers will set you back ~$1,000 when done. A good set of SS or ceramic coated long tube headers (TPIS, Stain Works, SLP, Belanger, etc) will set you back ~$1,250 when done. Go with the long tubes. Much more bang for the $$. You'll remove the pre-cats and improve overall exhaust scavaging with the long tube headers as well. Don't forget, you will probably run a bit rich after the headers so you'll want to get an LS1 Edit tune (~$500 most places) to maximize your car's performance.
As for the LS6 instake. It's worth a few HP and for the ~$400 or so it's a good bolt-on. You can also gut the MAF screens (just like GM does for the OEM 2002) for some additional performance improvement at no cost. A 2-1/2" cat-back exhaust may add another 3-5 or so RWHP in conjunction with the headers.
Be aware that a lot of the underhood bolt-on mods (air snorkle, MAFT sensor, MAF ends, ported throttle body, etc) are just a waste of $$. After spending ~$1,000 to $1,200 on those goodies you'll be doing really good to see a net increase of 5 RWHP. Not worth the money (I'd do a 100hp shot of dry NOS with the $$ first). :nonod:
I just put Balanger long tube headers on my '00 coupe. I had a A4 transmission, VaraRam, LS6 intake manifold. I dyno (after 1 hour relearn) before & after adding the long tube headers - I got 17 RWHP by adding the headers. I think I can tune it with LS1 edit now & get 6 to 10 more horses ..
Essentially, Z06s come with shorty headers. If you want to make significant power, go with the long tubes. The only advantage to shorties is ease of install. FLP makes a bolt-in long tube kit.
TIKTGTR - Definitely go for the Long Tubes! I installed TTS LT's on my 99 Coupe and I have been very pleased...more HP and more torque!
Looks like we are neighbors...I live in Mt. Pleasant and work in North Charleston off of Leeds Ave. I am sure we can get together if you would like to see my set-up.
With LT headers it is very difficult to bleed clutch fluid periodically. Might even be as difficult with shorties, I do not know. Frequent fluid replacement at the reservoir is what I did when I was using TPIS LT's. Good luck :smash:
I have a question about the LT headers. Can you run cats with them? I live in NJ and if I do not have cats then it will not pass inspection. I guess I could just get a sticker but that is a pain in the butt.

You can run the regular cats or high flow cats, just not the pre-cats.
If you have a 97-99 C5 that does NOT have the pre-cats I wonder if the HP difference between the long tube and the short tube headers is as big a deal?
I just put CCW's with 335 pilot rears and have a set of 18" (all four) zo6 chromes I'm going to list in the stuff for sale section, price is very negotiable if interested send me a post.
