It's supposed to be a deep 1 1/6" socket. Next size up is 28mm, or 1.1" as against the 1.0625" that you have. Have you measured the new unit? Or checked you actual socket size?

new unit is 1.070-1.073. my socket is 1.063-1.071. i'll head down to the tool store with sender in hand to see if i can get a better fit. cleaned the socket up with 400 grit and looks like some of the flats are off a few thousand's,just enough to mess things up.

Sounds like the socket is spot on. I would go with the 28mm - a bit of "slop" won't matter, especially of you get a hex socket. Heck, a 1 1/8 onch hex would happily do the job.

There is a special socket for the oil pressure switch. Sometimes you can get a regular socket but I had the same problem on my 2000. Went to a car parts store and bought a socket made for the switch.I bought mine at Oreillys but I would imagine all car parts stores would have them. You will see the difference when you get it. I think it was about 7 bucks where I bought it. The socket has flats sides on it rather than coming to points.
thanks for the reply. heading to o'reillys with sender in hand to get the right one. will stop at Menards on the way. they have a good selection also. thanks again.
o'reillys sender would fit perfect into my gm sender socket. my gm sender will not fit in any of zones or o'reillys sockets. they and myself had the deep well sockets but those are not going to fit in the limited space behind the intake assembly. i just took a look at the job ahead of me to change senders and just shook my head at what it will take to change them. i have kinda small hands but not small enough to get in there. swivel and wobble tools would help. i have a new gm sender and i'm not going to fork over about 40 bucks for theirs. any suggestions? i know a very good vette guy so i'll run this by him.
thanks . i'll be there with my sender in hand. o'reilly's socket would not fit my oem sender but would fit their sender. was not going to spend 40 bucks for their sender when i have a gm oem sender in hand. the only socket that would fit was one of those very large impact sockets. i don't think that big of socket would fit in the tight space. my socket is an old one but is very small and would fit pretty good back there where there is not very much room. i can touch up the oem sender to fit but then will it fit the bad one in the back of the block. thanks for the reply
I went in from the top to change mine - through the HVAC plenum. That way you can look down at it and see what you are doing. BTW, the "deepest" socket in that size I have is a Harbor Freight deep impact socket, which is what I used - but with a regular extension and ratchet. By the time the fiberglass at the base of the plenum was "reglassed" where I cut through it, no trace remains.
