Default Anyone Change Instrument Clusters?

I am thinking of changing the instrument cluster in my 1999, but I have heard different stories as to what to expect. Some say go ahead and the mileage stored in the cluster is what will be displayed; others say it must match what is stored in the Body Control Module. If that is the case, it must be sent to GM so they can program/match it to be correct. Has anyone changed JUST the cluster and what must be done?

Here's what I did. I have another 5 years left on my extended warranty so the mileage difference was a big deal to me. So, I took it to the dealer the day before the change and had them record the mileage. Then, after the change, went back to them and had them record the "new" mileage. I just hope that if I need warranty work done, they don't give me a hard time.

Forgot to mention that the mileage is stored in the cluster itself. There are some place that can reprogram a second cluster to match the first, but the going price is a couple of hundred bucks.

You also might want to see if this is going to affect the title of the car. I have a friend with a car (not a Vette) that had his instrument cluster changed under warranty very early in the life of the car. 4 or 5 years later, he went to trade the car, and he was told, and he later confirmed, that his title will have some sort of indication on it that calls into question the actual mileage, even though the dealer that did the warranty work can corroborate what happened. As a result, the trade value of the car was reduced by $2,000. :seeya

OK, Here is what I am trying to do. I have an extra instrument cluster that I have changed the face by painting some things. I want to put this into my car and try it to see if I like it or not. If so, I will paint my old original and re-install it. Or I may just put the original back in as is.

I am wondering if the mileage is stored anywhere else and if I will have any compatability problems. Thanks for any help.

The mileage is stored in the cluster only. The BCM doesn't record mileage.
Go ahead and change the cluster...
