In my c5 the shifter is in Park but the car is really stuck in reverse and wont turn on now. I think some sort of bushing or cable wore out. any ideas on what i should do?
As far as I know, there are only 2 likely points of failure. The shifter cable connects to the shifter with a plastic grommet that can fail and cause the cable to fall of the shifter. This is what happened in my case. The other failure point is at the transmission. Or, at worst, I suppose the plastic sleeve can break. any of these would leave the transmision shiftless. By removing the the center console and radio bezel you can pull up the shifter and see if the cable has become disconnected.
Yep that was the problem thanks! for now i just clicked it back into place but any ideas on how to actually replace said grommet lmao. also idk if this happeneed to anyone else but it seems like the center console wont go all the way back in its stuck on the shifter it looks like but ive got no clue and im really frustrated

You can buy replacement grommets at Advanced Auto. Be careful putting it in. If you stress the cable too much you will break the plastic housing and then you will need a new cable. I know that from experience.
If one of these bushings fail, is it possible to shift in and out of park?
I was at a stop light this afternoon and when the light changed I took my foot off the brake and the car rolled backwards.
I can shift in and out of park but not forward or reverse.
I had the same exact problem put the car in park but the car was still going in reverse. My problem was not a broken shift cable but when the shift cable was reolaced before i bought the car they left the retainer clip off at the rear by the transmission. I could drive the car bur everything was one position off.
