Default transmission removal

hey guys, just a quick question. i need both a rebuild of my engine and transmission. if possible, i plan to do both myself with help from my bro who used to be a mechanic. i know normally you need a vehicle lift to remove the transmission but was wondering if i remove the engine, can the transmission be pulled out through the engine bay? asking because i dont have a vehicle life and that will put a damper on my plans if i cant pull through engine bay. also my reasons is i want to save up the money to just do both at one time and just get it all done at once.

The transmission is in the back, has to come out in the back along with the torque tube. See the pdf file

YEP! The Transmission and Differential are bolted together and in the rear of the car. The diff sits on the rear cradle that needs to be dropped to remove the diff/trans assy.

I do ALL of my drivetrain work on jack stands. Granted they are the tall truck stands and I have to go through a sequence of getting the car up that high but, it is doable. YES, the differential and Trans are in the back and you need to drop the cradle to get the Differential/trans down.

Check out the QUICK JACK. Just google it and see if it has any place in your garage. I'm moving to TX and soon after I get there, I will have a Quick Jack.

While you have the drivetrain down, you really should examine the condition of the Torque Tube couplers and bearings. The couplers are well known to crack, dry rot and rip apart under load. Make sure that you get the real OEM couplers as the aftermarket ones can be worse than the old bad ones. Specifically the Dorman replacements!!

The C5 differential has a very bad habit of destroying the differential limited slip clutch belleview springs. They crack and if the broken parts get into the spider gears or the main gear, you can destroy the diff. Now is the time to check that stuff and at a minimum, replace the diff output shaft seals. Check out the C6 ZO6 up-grade parts that bolt right in and provide a good budget price on quality parts. Left and right output shafts, clutches, belleview springs.

Good luck on your trans and engine rebuild. Has your brother done any recent work on LS Engines and the C5/C6 transmission? There a list of unique things that the engine and trans need to work properly.

Dropped mine on jack stands a few weeks ago. Big stands. You want the car at least 2 feet in the air.

Due to the extreme weigh of the TT/Trans/Diff, I elected to remove the trans/diff together from the TT. Then I removed the TT. When you reassemble, it is soooooooo much better to just work on getting the light TT back into the clutch and mated to the bell housing. Then just remount the trans/diff assembly to the TT.

I also did ALL the work as a ONE MAN team and this made it a lot more doable

I don't know why more people don't take the differential/transmission off and THEN take the TT off.. it seems like it would be far easier working with the smaller components than the monster complete assembly.

For me at least, pulling out the whole TT/trans/diff/rear end assembly wasn't really a challenge. But putting it all back together I definitely preferred putting in the TT, then the trans (including situating the shift linkage), then the diff, then the rear end.
