I dropped off my 1997 C5 in St. Louis with my daughter when we moved from Denver to Naples, FL. My dad noticed some fluid under it so he advised her to take it to the dealership. I wish I knew because I would have directed her to take it somewhere else. They told her $1,400 to replace the water pump. It's a $95 part. I told him that is insane. What's the going rate for a water pump replacement?

My daughter lives by Forest Park. The car was at my dad's place in Chesterfield and he advised her to take it to Weber Chevrolet. So, ideally someplace in West County.
I prefer to work with Corvette specialists but swapping out a water pump, even on a Corvette, isn't a difficult task. A quality general repair shop can do it.

I appreciate any referrals.
I called the dealership yesterday afternoon and the service advisor had left for the day so I left a message they were not to touch my car without talking to me. He just called me and told me that $600 of the $1,400 was for a new water pump and coolant. The AC Delco pump is $95 on Rock Auto and coolant is perhaps $30 or $40. I told him not to touch my car. He just called back and said the car was already taken apart.
Crooked mother-f******* at Weber Chevrolet!!!
One of my tasks when I am in St. Louis over Thanksgiving will be to find an honest shop for my daughter.

D*mmit!!!!
keep raising hell! Ask the person you left the car with if they authorized them to work on the car or just to see what the problem is.
they sound just a crooked as the dealership in California where I bought my c5 from.

Man 'O Man I'm glad that you mentioned the name of the dealership that gave you a screwing. Not for me but others that live out there... I would call them back and ask if they provide a tube of KY with the service...
To be fair, the dealer is probably not using the AC Delco pump that we see listed various places for less than $100. That is more of a generic pump and if I remember correctly there are some that have had problems with it. The OEM pump (89018053) is no longer available. If you can find someone who still has one, its probably more in the $300 range. I believe there were also some differences in '97 and '98 pumps that the dealer will need to accommodate for. I'm not at all justifying $1400 for the job, but I think its a little more complicated than just installing a $95 pump.
AC Delco makes two water pumps for the C5. One is listed as GM Original Equipment (251-744) and the other listed as Professional (252-846). Amazon sells them for $100 and $200 respectively.
Unless your car is under warranty you should not be bringing it back to the dealer. They are best when charging back the manufacturer for warranty and recall work. The two overcharge each other and it all works out. For them. They are hopeless for cars as old as ours.

I agree. Water pump is one of the easier things to change on a C5 LS engine.....
