Default 2003 z06 shift fork issue?

I have what I believe is a malfunctioning shift fork which is preventing my car from going into second gear. If I put the car in second and let out on the clutch I can feel/hear the shifter grinding. The car will also grind going into fourth but it will still go into gear albeit not very smoothly.

I do have an MGW shifter installed as well. If this is an issue with the shift fork(s), does anyone have experience with having this fixed or doing it themselves?

This is a tricky one to diagnose over the internet, but here's my take:
  • Have you tried re-aligning your shifter?
  • Grinding while letting out the clutch in 2nd tells me something is wrong either with 2nd gear itself or shifting into 2nd. i.e. the synchro isn't fully engaging 2nd gear, and so it grinds. I'd lean toward a synchro or gear issue.
  • It's possible some of your plastic fork pads are done, causing contact between the fork(s) and synchro slider(s).

If it's not shifter alignment, then it sounds like your transmission will have to come apart. IMO this can be a DIY if you're generally mechanically inclined, though it can be intimidating. Recently I pulled apart and fixed my Z06's T56 in my garage, and I had zero experience with that previously (but it helps that I'm mechanically inclined and a mechanical engineer).
