Is there a lockout similar to the reverse lockout that prevents the driver from accelerating from a dead stop in second gear? I tried this today with my 01 MN6 and second gear would not engage. The tranny always went into fourth gear.
Re: Accelerating from Stop in Second Gear (jthorn)
You can start the sucker in any gear - it's actually easy to get rolling in second and third gear if you wanted to. It sounds like you or the tranny were having some sort of unnatural problem
Re: Accelerating from Stop in Second Gear (allanlaw)
I've made starts from a dead stop by accident several times. Down shifted to a stop and forgot to push it up into 1st. :conehead
Don't pull out into fast traffic and expect a normal rate of acceleration.
I can sit at a light with the clutch in and work the trans through all the gears. This was something I did for a while after installing the ripper to help loosen it up.
Re: Accelerating from Stop in Second Gear (jthorn)
done it in 2nd a few times by accident. I figure if CAGS makes you go to 4th at 20mph, starting in 2nd is no big deal, as long as you don't lug it horribly, and do it frequently. :seeya
Re: Accelerating from Stop in Second Gear (jthorn)
While it's not likely, it's possible that your CAGS is malfunctioning. The whole purpose of CAGS is to lock out second gear under certain conditions, but a dead stop is definitely not one of those conditions.
Re: Accelerating from Stop in Second Gear (jthorn)
Thanks everybody for all your input. The reason I want to start in second is for driving on ice and snow. We just got 6 inches of snow here and the Vette is my only vehicle. There must be something wrong with the transmission. I sometimes have trouble getting it into reverse too. Sounds like warranty work to me! :nonod:
Re: Accelerating from Stop in Second Gear (jthorn)
I have drivern nothing but manuals for 30 years and none of the cars had reverse gear synchronizers. If you try once to get into reverse and it doesn't want to go, let out the clutch in neutral and try again. One or two tries and it should slip right in. remember Granpa talking about 'Double Clutching' before synchronizers? Same thing. As for your other problems good luck.
 :D

If its doing this when its cold, it might be due to the tranny fluid. Try some synthetic fluid, should be less viscous at low temps
