bought a 97 base model torch red for my retirement. it's bone stock and since i'm a car guy since the early 60's i like to do small things that are not costly. has 48k original and i love it. was reading about the iat extension pig tail and was wondering if that was a fairly safe modification to do. don't want to start tripping codes. seems like cooler air reading would be better and a kind of innocent mod. btw it's an automatic. don't want to do the 400.00 dyno tune mods for about 4to10 hp on this vette. some of my small mods include a trans cooler,b&m shift firmness gadjet, oil catch can on the dirty side, bypass the hot water into the throttle body and i have been convinced by my career racer friends that these ls motors run hot. that was a hard one for me to digest. i still have some skills left but not many. just got back from my first night run here in 74 degree weather and i was in heaven. just paid my dues by changing that %#@+* oil pressure sending unit. sorry for the rant but do you think the relocation iat sensor is worthwhile? everything i have done so far can be changed back in about 45 minutes if need be with the original parts. thanks

I'm 66 years old, and from your "times"! I hear what you're saying-BUT-If you get the supporting bolt-ons (160° thermostat, LS6 intake, Blackwing Air filter, stock pipes with gutted cats, O2 simulators), and a tune last, you'll be in the 13.0s to 12.80s in the quarter. I started at 13.80s, and got to the 12.80s@110mph doing just that. Also got a tune from a guy in Michigan (for $300) who didn't have a dyno-Just a lot of experience. I wish I would've stopped there. Oh well......

Reason: Spell and more info to add
thank you so much for the reply Grinder. 13.0s to 12.80s would be fantastic on the street here. thermostat,ls6 intake, air filter, and stock pipes sounds like something i could handle now. will have to ask my ls racer friends about the gutted cats and sim. 02 sensors. still looking for a tune guy here. i started my hobby with shoeboxes (1963) the on to the 409 impalas. just turned 74 and have to be very careful on what i jump into. ls6 intakes seem hard to find here and was wondering is the Dorman intake was a good sub.? thanks again.

I know nothing about the Dorman. If I remember correctly, I broke them out with a small sledge and a BIG, long screwdriver. Be careful about the cats, and make sure your state doesn't require smog testing!! Proceed with caution!!! Even with all these bolt ons, I still wouldn't have broken into the 12s without a tune, and I doubt you will, either. I also had Flowmaster mufflers. I know, it all costs $$$, but all the bolt ons working as a system, it made a big difference!!! I'll also add that since my car is a 2000, it had the best factory LS1 cam: .500 lift, and, if I remember, a 116° LSA. If I had to do it again, I'd get a Callaway Honked, Haltech Stinger/Killer Bee or a Vortex Rammer filter/CAI. Good luck....

If you want to relocate the IAT sensor, there are kits/extensions/etc out there. When I later went to an LS6 MAF(this was after the high 12s runs), it has the IAT built into the MAF. Just saying......

One thing I forgot to add. I believe I also was running an ASP 25% underdrive balancer/pulley. Not 100% sure, its been over 15 years ago, but pretty sure I had it installed for the high 12s. I installed some Billy B shorties with the same tune, and I eventually got it down to a best of 12.50@113.9mph. A pretty good run for an A4 with an internally stock LS1 in my book....
thanks for all the info Grinder. i'm sure i'll be using some of it in the near future. were the flowmasters designed like the c5 mufflers with everything on the end?

YES! They have a pair of tips-I believe polished stainless-on each side. These were,, and probably still are, made exclusively for the C5s. I bought mine from Summit. It was 16 years ago,, but they probably still make them.
called a tuner yesterday. has not got back to me. will be asking for a daily driver tune. will be checking with my vette friend meanwhile. thanks.
BEFORE......You get a tune, make sure you have whatever changes you want to make, completed. If you change something AFTER the tune, it may alter the requirements needed for a "perfect" tune. I doubt it will make a huge difference, unless you go inside the engine, but you never know......
