Default DIC inoperative! Cluster help needed

Hey guys. I know this issues has been covered many times in the past. I've read through most of the threads here and elsewhere, but I haven't found what I'm looking for.

I'm looking for some direction on a 98 (non-HUD) instrument cluster. The DIC buttons are inoperative...nada...nothing. I scanned for codes and come up with B1517-Switch 2 signal shorted to ground. No problem. Swapped the switch, cleared the code in the IPC and same problem. DIC buttons inop and the same B1517 code was stored again. Then I unplugged the switch, cleared the code B1517 again and retested the IPC module with the DIC buttons completely disconnected. Same code B1517-Switch 2 signal shorted to ground telling me the issue is in the IPC itself.

My question is what next? I talked to one local cluster repair guy who started off telling me $1200 for parts. That was the end of that conversation. I know I can pickup a used cluster, but what about the odometer. This car is pristine with 50K on it. I have read that you can just swap the module that the "odometer memory chip" is on to the replacement cluster and transfer your original odometer reading. Great, but I have also read that the odometer reading is stored on a chip soldered to the DIC module board inside the cluster. If I am deciphering this information correctly, I would probably be transferring the existing problem to the replacement cluster.

I know there are others that have been through this and a several C5 Guru's here. Hopefully someone can get me headed in the right direction.

1) you need to replace the cluster
2) there are no parts available to repair the DIC
3) pick up a used cluster and take it to a speedometer shop, they can reset the mileage0
4feel the DIC switches and make sure they feel springy. mine felt flat when they were pushed and felt like they stuck closed when pushed

If you buy a used cluster you can try to swap this card from your old cluster into the used one you havejust bought .
This chip is contain the milage of your car .
Easiest way is to swap cards with the milage chip or secondly desolder this chip and solder it onto the circuit card in used cluster you have bought
