Default Stock Shifter Mod Help needed

I can't get the tap or die to start on the sections that need new threads. I got a 10mm x 1.25 tap and die. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Patience. It took me a while, but I finally got it started. I don't know how much experience you have with threading. I have some experience, but not an expert by any means. I too thought I was going to throw in the towel, but I'm very persistent (not to bright though  )

Get it real firm in a vice, and hold the tap or die as steady as you can. Work it back and forth a little at a time till you get a good bite.

I'm sure someone with more experience can jump in here, but stick with it. BTW, I just did this mod about three weeks ago and I love the results. I had a Ripper for about a year before going to this. The results will be worth it, especially with a short ****...

Darn it if I didn't have a post that I can't find that covered some of this before, so here goes a shortened (no pun intended) version.

First off, I used WD-40 on the metal surfaces into which the threads are going to cut. This helped immensely.

Here's a picture of cutting the threads into the shaft:

BEFORE I did this, however, I first drilled out the inside of the shaft out with a 3/8 inch drill bit - it should be .375 inches, whereas the 10mm tap is .393 inches, so you can see that as long as you drill cleanly, you still have some metal to thread after you drill using the 3/8 inch bit. This worked well, and my threads came out fine.

On the threads on the brass-colored piece, again I used WD-40, and a 1/2 drive socket wrench to put a deep socket around the die, pushing downward hard while turning the socket. Here's the result:

These little details were just my best guess. The general plan, however, belongs to chuckster.

Here's the result:

Good luck.

My Delrin **** is a very long **** but this thing is almost 2" shorter than a stock shifter, and about 1/2-3/4" shorter than my Kirban.

Dumb Question :conehead

Do you HAVE to remove the shifter to do this mod?
