ABS delays activating.
I was driving on a wet street the other day, when everyone in front of me came to a grinding halt. I hit my brakes, and the car actually skidded a couple feet before the ABS came on. Is this normal? I was under the impression that ABS comes on instantly when you slam on the brakes.

It only comes on when it senses wheel speeds that are out of tolerance. If you were on ice covered with water and hit the brake there is a high likelihood that all the wheels would stop at the same time and you would not get any ABS since the system would think the car came to a stop. However, you may have had a situation where you thought the tires were sliding but the wheel sensors were actually sensing some rotation and the ABS system did not do anything until a wheel actually locked up.
