I thought I heard somewhere that with the c5's impact-resistant qualities, you can drive away from being hit in the back without much damage, but the rear loses those qualities once hit and needs to be replaced. is that true? I was hit pretty hard friday, but the damage isn't bad, looks like it can be buffed out. I haven't gotten any messages on the computer. should I consider replacing the rear piece?
Yeah, a good hit will often damage the impact absorber under the bumper. Though the bumper has popped back out, the absorber may be damaged. It would be best to pull the cover and have a look.
Id probably have a body shop pull the fasica. The rear fascia pops out and hides damage underneath when hit.
Under the rear fasica there is thick styrofoam which is attached to a hollow square cross bar, which inturn is attached to the frame. This foam usually compresses and likely needs replacing. Harder hits require cutting off and welding a new cross bar in place.
Behind the cross bar is the rear rub of the car. The tub will crack if hit hard enough, and a tub replacement is going to be more than 5K to replace.
Here is a pic of the cross-bar without the foam and tub of course.
Here is another pic of the tub removed and the cross bar removed and one with the foam in place:
Re: rear ended--replace the rear? (Mean Green 2000)
[QUOTE]are you talking about the rear fascia or the gears Eric.....the fascia I'd definitely replace it and even consider a spectre werkes rear :D
yes, and absofreakinlutely! :D unfortunately, after checking with peach, replacing it is a little steep at this point (he mentioned $2k) and I don't want to have a claim on my insurance, it was a hit/run case. thanks for the info guys, I'll try to have a body guy check it out and will probably just buff it pretty good.
gotta love how resourceful this forum is.... good post kewlbrz:thumbs:
good opportunity if u were thinking of upgrading your back end with that specter werkes rear bumper with that subtle spoiler.... forget the actual name of it.

:iagree: thing is, I just looked at the police report and it says "zero damage" so I'm not sure if insurance will cover it or not. the officer was a nice guy but seemed like a real dipstink--didn't ask me 2 questions about the guy at fault (who sped away from the scene), but I gave him a FULL description of the driver AND the vehicle, yet none of that info is listed on the report.

Visiable damage is all they can really speculate on. Internal damage is another matter. Its up to the insurance companies to argue fault. Worst case you can submit to your own, and they can subrogate against the other parties if they give you trouble.
update--had a body shop guy look at it, he inspected the foam from underneath and said he doesn't see any reason to pull it off and check for further damage because the bottom part looks to be in great shape. estimate for the re-paint is $630. hopefully it buffs out--I don't want to spend $500 to receive $130 of insurance. it'd be different if he thought the fascia needed to be replaced.
Dang, I was going to try to buy the fascia off you! A new one is $273.36 and I need a used one!
hey--maybe we can work something out (unless you need one quickly). had another estimate from a trusted body guy today, he said he doesn't see a reason to replace it unless he discovers something while doing the repair, but he doesn't want to pull it off till he's starting the repair so . not sure what to do at this point. same price as the first. with neither of the estimates including replacement, I'm not sure if the insurance will swing it. :cry
