Having purchased the car in March, I wanted to make everything right. I live about 25 miles from a very reputable, highly recommended Corvette specialist. I had messages for ‘Service active handling, traction control and the gas gauge worked less often than it did. They checked the codes and replaced the steering position sensor (very expensive) and just last week, the fuel gauge sending unit. Interestingly, when the codes were reset, the gas gauge worked for a brief time. Last week, prior to the sending unit replacement, the was a storm and some water got into the car. Not a lot but I had to mop it out of the carpet, then I let it air out. When I went to use the car, all the codes and lights on the dash came up. Then the windows wouldn’t work. After a couple days, everything returned to normal 😳. When I took the car for the sending unit, I told them what happened and asked them to check it out. They didn’t. Picked the car up, gas gauge working normally, finally all clear on the dash. Very happy until… I got in to drive the car this afternoon and I had ‘Traction control’, ‘ABS’, ‘Service Active Handling’ and about 20 minutes into the ride, the gas gauge stopped working. 😡 Back to square one. Any insight is appreciated! Thanks!
Need to check the wiring in the drivers door harness for damage. This is in the rubber accordion going between the car and door. Common place for issues.
Also depending on the codes for the various modules the serial data bus can be damaged, i.e. shorted to ground or battery. This could be one of the modules that is not communicating properly due to the moisture damage like the drivers seat module or possibly the BCM which are both low in the floor board.
What year/model car and where are you located? This can help directing you to some one that can help. There are many on the forum that for the C5 can diagnose issues with these better than some professional mechanics.
Thanks Gary! The car is a 2001 Corvette base convertible, automatic. The location is Brick NJ, along the shore. I’m also going to get the seals replaced so that the top and doors seal tightly. Hmmm… drivers seat module?
Unplug the electrical connector for the drivers seat and see if there is a change in symptoms. Guessing that most of the water intrusion landed on the seats.
It is the black connector under the seat that you want to disconnect.
You have the classic symptoms of a serial data bus issue when you see all the DIC warning scrolling through, power windows don’t work, gas gauge on E, water temp maxes out…any trouble starting the car ??…yes your issue can be in the seat control module or maybe the BCM…the water intrusion issue is the “root cause” of this NOT the serial data problem…FIND THE LEAK FIRST !!…you will need to inspect and maybe clean the windshield cowl “udders” or drain ducts which drain the water from the bottom of the windshield cowl…either the water got in there or the convertible top…what happens with the bus issue is when a module loses a power or ground that power or ground will backfeed onto the data bus wire and all hell breaks loose !!…if 12 volts gets on that data wire no permanent damage will happen…for demonstration purposes I’ve taken 12 volts (and also ground) and shorted it to the data line (pin 2 on the DLC where the scan tool connects to) and I saw all those things you were seeing…I was living 25 miles north of you before I moved down here to Florida last summer and would have been fun diagnosing it for you…I think I know the “specialist” you are talking about !!…couple vids below !!…my Buddy Dave did the udder video.
I also moved this thread to the Tech section.

Good idea to include in your profile model year, your location, mods, tune ??…etc…when I was living up north a Forum member had an issue and I found out he lived a few blocks from me…I’ve seen his car every so often but never knew he was the one with the problem…LOL !!
If your car sits outside as mine Vert does 24/7/12, I cover just the top with a product called California Pop Top. It serves two functions; water repelling and keeping the interior cool.
Never had a water leakage problem since using. I did add more Velcro ties to help in high windy weather.
Thank you! I actually just ordered one and I’m headed to a shop tomorrow morning to discuss what needs to happen to replace seals and clear drains to avoid water entering the car.
C5 Diag, SilverC54me and rrwirsi, you guys put wind back in my sails! I’m taking steps to clean the drains and having the top looked at for seal replacement, top replacement or both. In the meantime, I’ll disconnect the module under the drivers seat and report back. Once it’s tight, I’ll see what I have and go from there.

Great !!…another new member just posted a new thread with another possible serial data issue similar to yours…when it rains it pours…LOL !!

Received the California Pop Top cover, installed per video, 1 week - elastic wore through the paint on both mirrors and we had some heavy rain and there’s water in the car. Cover was undisturbed. Apparently it doesn’t work for everyone.

Your experience is strange. Where was the water in the car? I been using the cover for 3+ years and have had no problems with the mirror cover elastic wearing through the paint or any water intrusion into the car even though I leave both windows down about 1 inch for air circulation. Just had 11/2 inches of rain with plenty of wind and all is dry in the car.

Drivers side floor. Also cleaned the cowl drains. Car was wet under the cover. Crazy. Having the convertible top replaced. Top ordered, 6-8 week delivery thanks to COVID. So miss having a garage…
