My '01, 107,000 miles is driving me nuts. DIC buttons have quit working I guess. Its not an everyday driver but when I do drive it it switches from metric to English randomly. I can hit the E/M button but it doesn't help.Bumps in the road don;t trigger it, lights on or off, stereo on or off, it's just random. The message reads service tire monitor and I can;t clear it either. None of the other buttons respond either. When this 1st started it would clear up after a 50 mile drive but that's not the case lately. It's got a 3 year old Red Top, a fairly new alternator... Any thoughts, is this common? The car still runs like it should. Thank you
The couple of occurrences of this that I have come across the issue is a failure in the gauge cluster main board. The cluster would need to be replaced with a good used unit since no new ones are available.
You may get lucky and it is the buttons that are bad.
Thanks Gary, I did put a new battery in it this week but haven't really driven yet because of my work schedule. I'm off for the next 10 days and hope to get it out maybe hit the highway put some miles on it and see how it acts. I was able to find a set of the DIC buttons, I've read up on the procedure and feel confident it's doable. The garage is air conditioned so that's probably how I'll spend a day or two. The buttons I purchased do feel better than whats in my car, they have more "snap" to them. If that doesn't fix it I'll find a cluster..Thanks,
I took my car out today and put about 150 miles on it, highway miles, dodged as many potholes as I could. After about 100 miles everything went normal. I could switch from English to metric, was able to clear my DIC message and run through all the buttons normally. I got it home and shut it off in the driveway. got back in it 15 minutes later to pull it into the garage and it was all messed up again, random English to Metric and DIC message locked in again...I bought a trim removal kit so I'll be tearing into the interior trim and removing the cluster. I haven't bought a cluster yet, thought I'd start with the DIC buttons(switch) 1st and hope for the best. Are there any re builders out there that fix these units or am I left with E-Bay? Anybody familiar with Atlanta Speedometers, I may send it to them..atlantaspeedometer.com After being home all week and driving the car about 300 miles or so the DIC had been working normally, that is until this morning. The tropical storm rolled by us and dumped a little rain but raised the humidity thru the roof, My garage does not have a dehumidifier, moisture will cause some conductivity issues, is that whats messing with my DIC?? The weather had been in the 90's all week and the car was driven 3 days in a row and everything worked, now it's back to it's old bad habbits..
Could it be humidity?
I hate to tell ya, but you'd probably be better off hitting up eBay for a used DIC button assembly (the one I saw was like $140) or a full gauge cluster (anywhere between $150 and $250). If you get another gauge cluster, look up how to swap the board from your old one to the new one so you don't lose your odometer mileage.
I ended up replacing the cluster after 2 sets of buttons. There are quite a few Corvette salvage yards out there, take your pick. Sent the one I found to a shop in Atlanta, they corrected the mileage and VIN. I plan on sending them my original cluster to have it repaired,someday..
