Default Electrical question

I have a service traction control / ABS light, service steering column lock message. I've had these on the car for a while. Nuisance but no driving issues. Decided to clean my grounds in the engine bay to see if that resolved my issues. Also pulled fuses 23 and 25 to make sure they were good. I'm still getting the service steering column lock message but now the car will shut off at 2 MPH so I'm unable to check my traction control / ABS to see if I resolved that. I checked my codes and all I'm showing is P0103. MAF sensor circuit high. My car is tuned with a speed density tune so as I understand it the MAF is doing nothing.
My question is it the service steering column or the P0103 that's cutting the car off at 2 MPH? The car was serviced under the factory recall years ago for the steering column lock.

Did you clear the DTC codes and try again? Keep a screenshot for reference but clearing them may allow it to drive again. P0103 doesn't cut it at 2mph. It makes it default to VE table. If something goes wrong with speed density though the ECM has no backup fuel table and reduced engine power results. After reset turn steering wheel lock to lock.

I have cleared the codes and nothing comes back except the service steering column lock. I had the recall performed years ago. 6spd car. I started getting the message about two months ago but other than a being a nuisance on the display it wasn't a problem. I thought it might be a ground issue so I cleaned the grounds under the hood and pulled and checked the two fuses recommend in the sticky thread. Now the car is shutting off at 2mph. Ironic it happened after I cleaned the grounds and checked the fuses.

A tuner can change that 2mph limit in the pcm in just a few minutes.

Good to know. I'd like to get rid of the nuisance message too. I should have the Tick performance steering column lock bypass tomorrow. Hopefully this will solve the message and the 2mph cutout.

I hope it does too!
my car must have had that stuff done too when I bought it. Never an issue. It does not have a lock plate.
Good luck!

Thanks for sharing.

Not typical Ron.

Look closely hidden inside fuel bowls. They stealthily look like Stromburg 97s huh. Fun project but back to the Vette....

Installed the Tick steering column lock bypass today. Didn't fix my issue. Per the recall years ago the dealer performed 89023816 and harness K 02195-C. Fooled around in the passenger footwell and tried cranking the car again. This time no message. I forgot to unhook my battery tender when I cranked it and didn't get the message. Put the passenger compartment back together, unhooked my battery tender, cranked the car up and the message is back. So I either have a weak battery or a loose connection in the passenger footwell. Does it ever end??

So my 99 manual transmission car apparently had two additional relays installed under the factory recall. This one was located at the steering column. It's also the one that gets unplugged when installing the steering column lock bypass. What wasn't clear to me from the installation instructions is where the bypass should be plugged in at. In my case there were two options. The incorrect one which I tried first was into the end of the harness in the picture above. The correct location was into the factory harness where this relay was previously plugged in. Maybe I'm not the brightest or maybe this will save others some headaches in the future. I no longer have the service steering column lock message though. Now I need to change the 2mph fuel cutout in my tune in the event this problem comes back in the future.

Sadly, as these cars age they can become an electrical nightmare......
