That happened to me about ten years ago. Upon detailed examination of the park brake mechanism, I found that the heavy, stiff steel wire that connects from the push button to the ratchet mechanism has a loop at the lower end which can be deformed by pushing hard on the button without FIRST pulling back on the lever to relieve pressure on the ratchet. I concluded that I could fix it, but that effort would require major steel surgery on the park brake mechanism.
I bought a good used park brake mechanism and saved the old one for a future project.
