Default tire size question

I plan to upgrade to ccw's and larger tires but have no idea what size to get. I will rarely, if ever, drive on a track/strip so I don't think I'll need anything outrageous, but I do intend to acquire a vortech next year so I think I'll need something bigger than stock. what size wheels would you guys recommend, and what size tires? does anyone have experience with vulcan tires?

Hey, I didn't know that those Vulcans made tires. I thought they just sat around playing mind games. Don't tell Mr. Spock that I said that.

Seriously, there are lots of choices, but if you are going to use the stock wheels (18x9.5 and 17x8.5) then you really shouldn't be going any bigger than 285's in the rear and 255's in the front. If you have Z06 wheels then you can go up to 305's in the rear and 275's in the front. You should pay attention to the overall diameter of any new size so you can approximate the diameter of the stock tires, or if that is not possible keep the diameter ratio of the tires (front to back) roughly the same as the stock tires. Personally, I'm using Hoosier 245/40/17 on the front and 275/35/18 on the rear for track driving. Both of these sizes are smaller in diameter than the stock tires, but roughly the same ratio, front to back. These slightly smaller diameter tires not only lowers the car, but they give me a better mechanical advantage in acceleration and braking on the track. So you see larger is not always better.

I hope you find the right combination for your needs.

mark--your reply didn't make much sense, one size in the rear but another size in the back? :jester and jim, I want to upgrade to CCW's like joecooooooooooooool's (going to try emailing him again), but I don't want overkill or tubbing. I'm fairly ignorant about tire and wheel sizes so I'm hoping someone can just spell it out in plain engrish exactly what size wheel and tire I need. everything is stock now, but I want the upgraded ones to be bigger.

I may, once in a while, take a few laps on our local track and maybe a run or two down a strip. otherwise it'll all be normal street driving (I drive pretty slow normally) with an occasional throttle stomping :D.
