Here's another point for consideration.... I'd love to do 3.73's & 3000 t/c, but my ultimate goal later next year is to install an s/c - my question is: Do you think it would be wiser to stick with 3.42's rather than 3.73's & what t/c stall would be good with the s/c??
I agree with Tut that it's good to take things in small steps, but I'd really like to make my gear selection in light of my car producing 100+ more hp next year. Thanks all for any advice!
dads01, I am in a very similar situation. I am planning a head and cam package in February/March and I already have the 3.42 gears purchased (planning SY3500). Now with all of this talk, I am considering selling the 3.42's and going with 3.73's?
I started with 3.42s and a PT2400...I just installed the 3.73s and wish I never put in the 3.42s! Now I am going for a little more stall as soon as I have enough $$ for a converter. I'm leaning towards a Vig 3600 right now. I had 2.73s just like you for a long time, after the gear swap I wish I would have changed it the day I bought the car :yesnod:
Thanks for all the posts.
I am leaning towards 3.73's since I live a whooping 5 miles from work and netted less than 5k miles over last 14 months in my GTI. 3.73's and a 2600 to 3000 stall seems to be the most likely combo right now, but I am always open for more advice :D
I think the 3.73s are an excellent choice and I really like mine. Part of the enthusiasm for 3.42s comes from the fact that no other option was available for a long time. I'm mulling over swapping to a 4.10 now, I don't think 3.73s are my limit as much as I used to. If you want to spend some time at the track don't understall. 2600-3000 seems pretty small to me.
For you guys with the big gears, how has it affected your top end? Does it pull any in 4th gear? I want a balanced car, one that is suited for both the drag strip and "sactioned" top speed runs ;) . I figure that the higher gears shortens the pull in 3rd and does not really make 4th that much stronger. Am I wrong in this assumption? I currently have the 3.15 performance axle(which I feel is a good all around gear), but I am contemplating a move to 3.42's to help out at the drag strip as long as it does not hurt the top end power of the car. What are your thoughts? By the way, is it just me or does the 2 to 3 shift drop you out of the power band??
RunNE1, IMHO 3.42s are a better all around gear than 3.15s. The 3.42s will certainly help your 1/4 mile performance and should give you the same or even more top speed since horsepower limits the top speed of our cars. You will be able to turn higher RPM in 4th(overdrive) with 3.42s.
By the way, is it just me or does the 2 to 3 shift drop you out of the power band??
Depends on where your power band is. Your converter's shift extension characteristics will have a lot to do with whether or not you overshoot. A really tight converter will pull your RPM down closer to the ideal of rpm_after_shift = rpm_before_shift * (to_gear_ratio/from_gear_ratio). Ideal doesn't mean desireable, it means ignoring the converter.
Man, looking over your sig it sure looks like you've got a lot into your car. May I ask what happened that caused your A4 to go? Do you track the car frequently? I'd sure hate to think the A4 is soooo easily damaged with around 450 hp.
My car has never been at the track and what hard driving I have done is on some of the twisty roads here in California. It has been through a fair amount of manual shifting but not many at full throttle over the 32000 miles it has covered and only a handful of 0-80+ runs at full throttle.
Since 11/16 when I picked up my car after the H/C, I have put about 1000 miles on it. About half of that was the drive back to SF from SoCal. Since I was aware of the problems the A4 can have after a H/C, I have avoided full throttle shifts except for three times when I gave friends a ride and showed them how the car moves out. After the last time the computer threw the transmission component slipping code. I cleared it and the car returned to normal and it hasn’t returned but that’s enough for me :nono:
No more hard launches and full throttle shifts until I get a FLP Level 4 :yesnod:
