Question-does Chevy require rear differential fluid changed at 7500?
Question-does Chevy require rear differential fluid changed at 7500? My dealer says "Yes..."
I read manual, and can't see that :bs anywhere (even though my mechanic friend changed the oil, manual, and rear diff at 10K with all Chevy spec lubricants...).
Absolutely not! In fact, life of the vehicle is the true requirement.
Having said that, mine has seen 5 times in under 40k miles. One OEM, one by me and 3 by the dealer under warranty. I did one change on the outside possiblity that break in wear and tear generated metal shavings etc.
I have seen a lot of heavy use folks say that app 30k is a good mileage number.
To tell you the truth if not for the warranty issues (in my case, rear differential seals leaking [a common c-5 problem] ) I would have changed it next at 100k. So judging by your change at 10k, you have a way to go. My take is that the dealer is selling extra services.
The German dealers say it is required for warranty at something like the first 5 or 7.5K, but we tend to do a little more high speed cruising than in the states. :) :yesnod:
Another honest dealer....... :bs GM recommends 100K. I like to tinker and intend to keep the car for awhile, so I did mine at 6K and again at 30K. Most cars never see a change! :smash:
before GM used syn.gear lube they said you needed to change the diff fluid if you had a posi rear gear to prevent the plates from gaulding and chattering in the turns. if you have syn diff fluid you do not need to change at 7500 miles. i switched my 2500 silverado gear oil to syn at 5000 miles and at 98000 it still has the same gear oil and the posi works fine. :chevy

:iagree:
The early C5's should of all been changed as they were a mineral based non synthetic and failures were showing up in hard use cars. I changed mine to Redline even though I have a 2000 as I was changing the MN6 so I just did both.
So now which is it...? The C5 have what in the Rear? I know I added Chevy spec fluids and a friction modifier-no synthetic...
I don't know what fluid you added, but to my knowledge GM switched to synthetic fluid sometime in the 97 C5 production run. So I guess it depends on what part number you used.
Replacing the diff oil at the first 10,000 miles service (only that one time) is part of the standard servicing procedure in the UK. Sounds to me like the same sort of cheap insurance as changing engine oil at 5,000 mile intervals instead of 10,000.
