My 99 FRC HVAC freaked out today. It shows an outside temp of -38 F and it is actually nearly 80 F (You gotta love south Texas). It wont let me turn the AC on it keeps turning it back off and turning the heat on. I messed with it for about an hour and never got the AC on. I tried auto and manual the AC light would just blink for a couple of seconds and then the heat would come on. I am going to take it to the Dealer tomorrow, but it is out of warranty and I would like to walk in there with some Info ( I dont trust dealers). I thought it might be a faulty outside temp sensor, but I dont know. If anyone has experienced this or knows what it could be, Please speak up.
Thanks
John
Sometimes if moisture can find it's way to the outside temperature sensor it can cause a false reading. It will correct itself after a few minutes of driving. However in your case, I would guess your outside temperature sensor is dying a slow death.
Unplug the outside air sensor - it's below the passenger headlamp and inboard near the bottom of that cavity. With the lights up and hood up, you should be able to reach it.
Once unplugged, see what the outside temp reading is. By default, the system should read +58F when it sees and open circuit on the sensor. If the outside temp is still wacky, then the head unit is probably the problem.
Ditto on the temp sensor. That is usually the cause of the problem you discribe. It is mounted through a hole in the radiator schroud just below the passenger's side hood hinge. Look for a two wire plug near the lower edge of the shroud.
I did not know about the +58 deg default. That is good to know. It should get your A/C working. I almost want to unplug mine just to check it out.
