I recently had a headlight motor fail it made a horrible clicking noise when lowered. I ordered a new motor after deciding not to upgrade . Getting my fat hand and fingers in there was a challenge. In the end I removed the 2 pins the headlight pivots on and it made it so much easier to remove the 3 bolts and the nut on the drive shaft. You must be very careful not to damage any paint around the headlight but it's no too bad. So for anyone else doing this job pull the hinge pins and it'll make it a lot easier. I'll replace the light bulbs while I'm in there
I'm sure the nylon gear will last as long as I Own the vette
I hope you're right. My advice for gear replacement vs motor replacement depends on the year of the car. For the older cars I say replace the gear since you don't have to worry about gluing the housing back together. For the newer C5s, it's easier and cheap enough to just replace the whole motor.

I just had to replace one HL motor. Found prices all over the place from 50 to 350 dollars
Since my vette is 2002 the HL motor is glued and I didn’t want to deal with it. I found replacing motor to be fairly frustrating and would not have had much patience gluing the motor together. So all in all I feel comfortable with the repair. I rarely drive at nite anyway and don’t have any tunnels to go thru. I will say the new motor has the three screws and no glue
