wow, who'd a thunk it. Brake cleaner is your friend, sprayed it all around that trunk release on my Z and boom pops up like half an inch, I don't have to go back and make sure the windows are up and close the door to make it pop anymore, perfect solution. Thanks to these guys on the farm everybody has a solution for something.
looks like I need to do something like this.... thanks!!
I had a similar situation with my '01 vert. I lubed the hinges and changed the struts. Still would not pop up far enough to grab it. I used some silicon spray (on a rag) and wiped down the trunk latch. That did the trick. Pops up about 1 1/2 inches now.
A quick coupe of shots of silicone lube into the latch area cured mine as well. Thanks for the tip!
The struts hold the lid open, but provide little assist in popping the first inch or so due to the angle they are acting through . . .
Deck/Trunk lid does not pop up enough when release button is used.
Corvette (Y-Body) 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 trunk lid does not pop up when released.
There is a tension spring that is supposed to pop/push up the rear lid when released. This spring is supposed to contact the bottom of the U-shaped striker when the trunk is closed. When this condition occurs, the spring is riding up on the side of the striker. There may even be a witness mark on the underside of the striker and/or lid. The attaching holes for the striker that mounts to the underside of the deck lid needs to be slotted approximately 3 mm (enough to reposition the striker). Generally the striker must be moved towards the front of the car.
The problem is that the spring, (part of the latch) that pops the trunk open, has come out of position and rather then hitting the horizontal part of the striker (the part that is mounted on the underside of the trunk lid), it is contacting the vertical portion of the striker. The solution is to reposition the striker on the trunk lid so that the latch spring can only contact the horizontal portion of the striker. This may require slotting the holes in the striker in order to move it far enough to correct the problem.
The ones I bought from Amazon were Stabilus, same name as was on the OEM struts. Now, the question is: Are they OEM, or Chinese knockoffs?
Not that Amazon ever sells knockoffs!

I put about a 1 mm shim on the spring which helped a bit, the trunk lid popped up almost a 1/4 inch. I then added penetrating oil to the lock and it popped up just short of an inch. Thanks for the tip. I hope I'm done with that trunk lid.
