Default C5's and Octane levels

I know that most everyone with a C5 runs with 92 octane gas, but I'm wondering if this is nessisary. Does the 10.1:1 (I think) compression ratio warrant the higest octane gas? What are the different ratios for the different octane levels?

I've also heard that the C5 is set up with a sensor and timing adjustor to detect and eliminate knocking...is this true?

You could run lower octane gas if you like. Your computer will dial back the timing considerably and your engine might start pinging. You will loose power and shorten the life of your car. Are you thinking about running regular in your C5?

I've only been driving the car for a week and a half now, and thus far I've been running 87 octane gas...simply because I haven't read that it needs 92. Until I did a little research this morning into the compression ratio of the Vette vs. other cars I know require 92 octane, I thought our V8 was a relatively low compression engine. I will definately run high octane gas now, however. Thanks.

By the way, do I have to put a picture on a website and then link to it to put it here (either on the post or in my signature) or can I just import it from my hard drive?

Running 92 is the best thing to do Dave. I am glad you found out right away. :yesnod: To post photos, you will need to put them on a webpage and then post here. Linking to your own computer wont work here. :(

 Dave you only save 1.00 a tankfull :nono: Sorry to bust your butt but if you are having problems with which grade fuel to burn in your high compression sports car. It might be a good time to sit down and watch the video and read the owners manual from cover to cover before you put the key back in the ignition. Now tell us how many coats of Zaino you have on your Vette :jester

Well...that could be a problem. I bought the ride without a video or an owners manual (although I downloaded the manual a couple of days ago). I wasn't putting the 87 octane gas in the ride to save $$$...I'd like to think I'm not that cheap. Most people that I've talked to are under the false impression that a higher octane gas somehow implies higher quality and therefore more power, even in normal low compression engines. Since I'm not a dumbbutt (30-40% of the time, anyway) I wasn't going to fall into this category of people, so I was using low octane gas. Unfortunately for me, however, my grand plans to avoid being a moron have been thwarted, and it turns out I need to start using the 92 stuff. No big deal.

Oh, and I've owned the car for 10 days, washed it 4 or 5 times, and waxed it once. I'm planning to wash it again this afternoon, to get it ready for a lady I'm taking out tonight. Sweet.

A cheap a** friend of mine always filled up his 98 with 87 and last summer his motor went with only 60k miles on it....no mods....not very hard driving. I'd go with the 91+.
