I've got the intermittent P0492 code. I've done the WD-40/Compressed Air trick a few times but it comes back again every couple of months. How big of a job is it to pull the intake and get to the valve? Does anyone know the part number or what the valve is specifically called for the driver's side A.I.R. system?
For me, an old guy, pulling/ replacing the intake manifold the first time was about 2-1/2 hours. Once you have done it, it takes less time.
If you are going to pull the intake manifold, consider relocating the oil pressure sender to a location where it is easy to change the next time it goes out. Lots of posts in search about that. Also consider relocating the passenger side secondary air valve to a location where the intake does not have to be removed for replacement next time. And, if the car is 2001 or later C5, consider connecting the rear head coolant air bleed ports which are blocked, to the front coolant air bleed piping.
If you pull the intake manifold, be very careful to not drop anything into the open intake ports, especially something small that can get past an open intake valve and which can then require fishing with a magnet through the spark plug hole or pulling the head to remove. Tape them up and then don't forget to remove the tape. New intake manifold gaskets.
There are also posts about abandoning the bad passenger side secondary air valve in place and simply relocating the passenger secondary air system with a new valve and new driver side pipe to the passenger side of the engine compartment and re routing the passenger side secondary air hose around the front to the driver side.

Thanks for the advice! This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I'll almost always do the "while you're in there" kind of work if I know about it ahead of time.
Hey Guys I need some advice - I am thinking about buying a C5 but the owner says the P0492 code has been popping up for the last few years of ownership - He put over 10k miles on the car since the code re appearing. Would this damage the motor ? He says the car still runs great. I havent gone to check it out yet but Im kinda nervous about this. I need something reasonably reliable to have fun on the weekends etc. Please let me know your thoughts on this- car has 129,000 miles 2004

You sure 0492 is the DTC ??…doesn’t look familiar !!
yes I understand that the code is for a check valve in the secondary air system - I just wanted to know if it will damage the engine if you drive with the error code on for over 10,000 miles. I was thinking about buying the C5 but i hesitated because of this. I was just hoping someone had additional knowledge weatherReply it can harm the motor thats all

If the secondary air pump is not working or a check valve is plugged, no long term damage will occur to the engine but you will get codes (and a check engine light). C 5 smog checks in most states will not pass if the secondary air pump or system check valves are not operating, Some C5 owners tune out the secondary air system and remove it, but again, the car will not pass smog in many states in that condition.
