The dealer said GM was concerned with after market air cleaners that use oil. Well I posted a problem with check engine light a few days ago. After picking up the car it's performance was so-so or normal as I remember it. So I took the advice of one of the forum members and got a can of electrical parts cleaner and AutoZone. I know the dealer didn't do anything because everthing is as it was. I sprayed it down with the cleaner and Wa La, goes like a raped ape. I took off the filter and CAREFULLY lightly oiled it but it was hard to do with the spay can that was in the kit. Guess what 300 miles later Check Engine light. So I used the rest of the can of cleaner figuring I over oiled again and Wa-La off and running strong again and light went out. Now the Question how do you oil that thing without this problem again???

Jim--After I spray mine (just enough for the slight red/pink color) I usually let them sit out in the sun for 30 min to an hour and then dab the excess off with a lint free cloth just before the reinstall. Has worked pretty well so far....no codes or check engine light. :steering:

:iagree: Same here except mine turns blue. Good advice.
Re: Filter oil on MAF sensor, now a believer. (jimman)
When I had the Vortex air box on my car, I ran it for 10K without servicing the filter. When I did remove it, clean and re-oil it, I put too much oil on the filter to the point that it was running off the filter on to the ground. (classic case of the too much is just right approach) I did keep in mind the possibility of the oil on the MAF and I was hoping that it would not be a problem.
Anyway after all the oil running out that the filter didnt need... I fired up the car, the car ran fine. :)
The only time I ever had a problem with my MAF was...
One weekend I was at Buttonwillow running the 3 mile road course in the rain. This was no light rain either :nono: I was damn near drowning from all the water that came into the car :cry Anyway, while going down the front straight... the check engine light came on, reduced power, shocks in operable, and I limped around the entire track on 4 cylinders. :cry :bs When I got back to the trailer, we determined that the MAF was having some problems. We removed the MAF and looked inside it thinking it was wet... It was not wet... then I cleaned it with something like Jim used and it still was not right... I luckily had my POS Granatelli MAF in the tool box. I swapped out the MAF and finished the day of racing. :blueangel:
Some time after that, I swapped back the Granatelli for the OEM MAF and the car ran fine. That OEM MAF is still on the car and at 616 RWHP I can say that is one heck of a MAF. :smash:
Imagine if I had to drive home from BW (300) miles in reduced power mode at 40 mph top speed?? :cry :bs
Now you guys know why I trailer my car to the Events. :yesnod:

Didn't have a problem in 90K with my 00, only this one and not sure why. The wires of course look fine but what can I say, did it twice and both times it worked. Anyone remove the screen on the 02, I know the Z06 has it out.

Thats weird... hopefully you wont have this problem again.

I have an 'o1 that I removed the honey comb mesh from. I am running a K&N taped to the original box with no lid, till tomorrow or Sunday, then it will be a Vararam with the TorqueMaster filter. I haven't had any problems to date with 29k miles on her.
and BTW, I think I have cleaned it and oiled it once in the 20k+ miles I have had it on the car. :nono: The Vararam install will be the next intake filter cleaning. I know, I know... I am a bad man. :D

Try Amsoil tack-oil for air filters. (I'm NOT a dealer or even remotely associated with one). This oil is very sticky and thick and far less prone to migration.

Other than a very cool sound I'm not sure what the advantage is. During our dyno day we didn't see any difference from stock. Also tried a Fram and Napa paper with no difference noted.

Has anyoen had problems with an aftermarket filter that was never re-oiled?
I bought the K&N OEM replacement and once it gets dirty, I plan on just throwing it away and buying another.
Is it just the filters that have been re-oiled that are coating the MAF wires?
I have a blackwing on my car,has never been re-oiled and no problems.I don't understand why some are re-oiling them when they are good for 50,000 miles. If in doubt, just cheack the pop up indicator on the front.Yellow is good, green time to re- oil.
