Default 3.5" air filters

I was told by the tuner that before getting it tuned that the dual filter or even y type volant intake caused turbulence maf issues. So with that in mind i was going to maybe just run a straight 3.5" air filter 5" long directly off the maf sensor. The filter opening on the stock c5 and z06 air box isnt that big from what ive seen. Does anyone know if the standard 3.5" 5" long cone filter will flow enough or better to look into a 3.5" by 8" length filter. I think they may perform pretty well.

Going from memory, my local club has had many members of the engineers who developed the LS1, LS6 and LS7 engines: from those working in the dyno room to those writing the engine and body control Software. They mentioned that the Normally Aspirated LS1 engine had air metered through the MAF and interring the engine thru the TB. They would talk about the various test they ran with the early available aftermarket air intake systems. The agreed upon best system was initially the Black Wing then to the Ambient Air Intakes like the Veraram and Halltech front license area system. The biggest restriction was the intake into the combustion chamber (about 43.5 cu in) Since that was a standard, the cooler the air the more oxygen per intake was the most efficient. One of the worst systems mentioned was the dual cone air intakes because of the volume and opposing directions of the air supply. Simple physics say placing a large intake area into a small orifice will actually slow down the rate of flow. Bottom line to go larger air input thru the MAF/TB will slow down the flow and the PCM will lean out and the TB opening will be more restrictive. A True CAI would be the better way to go.

Definitely true what you tuner stated about the Y type air intakes. I had a Vararam on the car initially, and datalogged it vs an Airaid air intake system (single filter, nothing crazy), and the MAF signal was so much smoother in the Airaid. I also noticed a little jerkiness in the car with Vararam, especially at highway speeds and low load/rpm.

Ideally you want some straight piping before and after the MAF. I like the idea of getting as large of a filter area as possible-- least amount of restriction and will stay clean longer etc. Lots of space available in the C5 so I would look at something on the larger side like 8"

Why not just do the "zip-tie mod" instead with the stock airbox? Probably same amount of airflow, and the plastic box behind the filter blocks direct airflow from the hot radiator.

Most intake setups are used with single 3.5"+ pipe setup to a single air filter. The tuner just stated that the dual cone filter intakes even the volant intake caused maf turbulence but which ever intake or maf , descreened, ported maf ends would need to stay as that was what the vehicle would be tuned for. I was just going to use a bigger 3.5 air filter directly off the maf after the air bridge. Said the stock air bridge was probably fine down at this power level. Looking to maybe fit one of the wider round type of intake filters directly off the maf sensor. The condenser air dam i believe will keep the filter or intake from radiator heat. The BBK 1788 is 3.5" inlet 10" wide and 5" tall at the base and 8" in length. The top of it i believe narrows down to 8"x3" which should fit. Theres not much room with even one of the smaller filters i have directly off the maf.
