Get some 5/16" vacuum hose, (about 24" or longer if you would like)
Put one end very near your ear opening and point the other end in the vicinity of the noise. Keep the hose end moving to zero in on the noise. If you, do it right, it will allow you to pinpoint the exact source. .
If you put a screw in the end of the hose, you can touch the SCREW to any part of your engine and listen to something like a rotating bearing or a fuel injector. Its a poor man's stethoscope for cars.
