Default Fuel Leak

I have been smelling fuel while the car is in the garage.

I looked under the tank by the skid plate and saw it was wet. I started to take the plate off and saw that the leak is flowing down the belly of the divers side tank. Im guessing this is the fuel pump seal maybe? I also have a evap / lean code that maybe this is affecting? p0171..im going to change the purge valve also but apparently all the parts are discontinued be the dealer..

Does anyone have a parts list for this and a youtube video to work on the fuel tank? If I take of the fuel tank metal plate off will the tank just drop or is there another harness? It seemed it was coming down as I was taking the plate off... I have some pictures...

I vaguely remember your issue from a few months ago but did you ever use your scan tool to see what your fuel trims were doing after you filled up the tank ??…I said the purge valve MAY be the cause so I wouldn’t just go and change it. Did you fill out your profile so we know what we are dealing with here…do you have a non FFS fuel system ??…is your fuel pump at the bottom of the left fuel tank ??…tank removal is VERY labor intensive and requires the rear of the car to be pretty high off the ground…hard to tell in your picture where that leak is located…is it the left rear corner of the tank ??…you should take off the aluminum access plate and look !!..is the leak coming from above the pump ?!

Hey C5, thanks for the help. I havnt tested the fuel trims after filling the tank yet.
I figured id change the purge valve since I can get to it and its relatively cheap...?
I filled out some profile now.
Im not sure what fuel system I have? The glove box has a FSSR14? I dont see the fuel pump so maybe its at the top.
The fuel appears to be leaking down the tank and sitting at the bottom inside the aluminum plate. ...I went to take the aluminum plate off but i was afraid that it was holding the tank up? If I take the plate of is there something else holding the tank?

If you take the access cover off you would have seen the pump so with the FFS RPO code it’s topside…it was changed roughly halfway through the 2003 model year…that aluminum plate doesn’t hold the tank up…I’ve had mine off a few times !!

im following up on this thread....

I called a shop to help me fix the problem since I dont have a lift. They asked me if it has a return line? its 13 hours of labor vrs 2 hours of labor depending on the return? Does anyone know how I can find that out? Is there access from inside the bay to look at the fuel pump or any seals from the top side without dropping the tank?
I do still have the evap leak code coming on and off.

Being that you have an 03 you should have the later fuel system (FFS) so yes the tanks will have to be dropped

C5 Diag.......Not so sure you are 100% correct on the bottom plate. I agree that the tank will not fall out with it off, but I think that is because the other connections to the tank. I made the mistake of driving the car around the block with that plate off and the tank was not happy....It was hanging down further and ended up leaving me stranded as my fuel pump wiring (racetronix wiring for my SC) pulled too hard and broke a wire connection...

Does anyone know what a typical problem is for this? Bad seal or valve on the fuel pump? Broken return line? Not sure what would cause the leak and evap code.

The FFS system cars had an issue with the crossover tube connector cracking. You can look up if your vin is in the affected range. If the crack is big enough you will get an evap code. There can also be an issue with the fill tube causing a leak. With the cracked connector the leak is most noticable when the tank is full. If the connector is bad the tank must be replaced. Yours isn't included, since you have a 2003. It seems that this was isolated by GM to 2004 C5's only. In any case, you need to get a "smoke" test done to determine where it's leaking from.
