We were told by a dealer that we need a rear axle oil seal on our 99 FRC. I remember reading on this forum that the actual problem is not always a leaking oil seal. It could be something much simpler. I don't remember exactly what the simpler was; however, it wasn't the oil seal. Could someone please tell me the possible alternatives?
Not sure if this is helpful, but I had a little experience with a persistently leaking diff.
As part of a diff LSD rebuild I replaced both side cover O-rings and both axle seals. Ultimately this didn't stop the leak on the passenger side, so I replaced the axle seal again. Still leaked!
Longer story short, my diff will leak when there is a vent valve in place. If I replace the vent valve with a breather line instead then the leak ceases.
In general, the diff vent valve's rubber diaphragm can become concave over time and stop allowing the diff to vent properly... thus enabling excess pressure buildup that can result in a fluid leak.
Even after replacing the valve on my diff it still leaked.
I can't find info on it right now, but I recall there may have been a GM TSB to replace the vent valve with a hose for people with persistently leaking diffs.
