It is the most common place for mice to nest. Pull the blower motor and see if it has formed some corrosion on the metal. It might just be mouse urine you are smelling. Even with the mechanic pulling stuff out he may not have gotten everything. The little buggers get everywhere so pull the wheel well covers also since that is a favorite spot for them. Just have to check everywhere find where the stopped to ****.

took it out for a drive and the fan started thumping, took it out and found a freshly killed mouse stuck to the vanes, put it back together and it still thumped, took it apart again and the fan was full of a mouse nest. so now how can I get the smell out? run water thru it? bleach?

I would suggest an A/C coil cleaner aerosol product, you can find them in any Home Improvement store. Safe for the coils and has a pleasant smell.

Make sure you vacuum the passages around the blower motor to remove any additional nesting materials while the blower motor is out. Also turtle wax makes a product called odor-X that is a spray bomb that you release in the car while the ac is running on recirculating. The car stays running that way for 15 minutes while the bomb does it’s thing. I have not used it myself but a friend said it worked. There must be similar products out there.
Also if you have cleaned everything well the smell should disappear after a while. This is why how to keep them out in the first place is discussed frequently on this forum.

Buy yourself an Ozonator for $100 on Amazon. After your cleaning is complete run the Ozonator for about 45 minutes to an hour with windows closed (not with you in the car) with the a.c. running and vents open. That will help kill the stink significantly.
