Hi Folks, for some reason, my windshield washer pump, after putting in new fluid will decide to run while the engine is on, without my pushing the button for it to work.
Earlier today it pumped out the entire new gallon of wiper fluid because I had the engine running and walked away from the car for a couple of minutes. Eventually it will stop and it won’t occur again for months.
I’ve found no rhyme or reason for this to happen.
Anyone else have this problem?
Intermittent issues are very hard to fix because you gotta probably diagnose it while it's malfunctioning...
As usual with electrical issues, start with the wiring diagrams. Do you have those? You basically need to look at the wiring that goes to the pump, the fuses and relays that feed it, as well as the washer control switch itself (which really means testing the stalk.) I'm not sure if there are any other elements to check, but that's where I'd start.
You could start by just replacing relays and stuff but that probably won't do the trick. Usually when relays malfunction, they don't fail closed, they fail open. But, yknow, a new relay is like $8, you may as well start with that?
Sounds like the multifunction switch. If you can get the harness out by removing the knee bolster and the bottom of the steering column you could get a multimeter in there and see if the switch is closed when it should be open.
