I've got a 2000 convertible, LS1 5.7 auto. I recently picked up a 3.42 Z06 rear-end. Installed it. put it in gear, no movement forward or reverse. When I putit back into park, I heard the park fork in the trans go click-click-click. Which tells me the trans is working fine. The rear-end is not putting the power to the wheels. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks
Did you remove the diff seal plate from your auto diff and put it on the 3.42 diff before you did the install?
A4 requires the diff plate. The MN6/M12 does not. So the Z06 doner diff needs your old plate on it before you install it.
If you did that already I'm out of ideas. My A4 knowledge is bubkis.
Yes I did put the plate in. I'm thinking about talking it to a dealer and see what they say. It's out again (No very happy about putting it again. I got it from a Corvette Salvage Yard in Mississippi. I thought they would check it out before selling it...

No offense, but if you have the mechanical ability to install it, you have the ability to check it out before going to all that trouble. If you took it somewhere to be installed, that person / shop would have also possessed said know-how. So no point trashing the salvage yard. The first word in their label is "salvage". This is why I just turn my head and walk away when someone suggests installing a used automatic transmission in a car they value.
I've yet to tear into one of these, but knowing how diffs work, the most likely explanation is that the spider gears are sitting in pieces at the bottom of the case.

So, I pulled it apart. The clutches are gone, nothing left on the clutch disks, and the spring washers in both clutch packs are broke. So, I was sold a Junk diff for the price of a working used one. I have 2 clutch packs and 2 spring washers ordered and on the way. I will be calling the Business Monday and see if they stand behind it parts and labor for pulling it, tearing into it, and installing it. Hope you have a good weekend...
Thanks for the heads up, on the shops in the area!! I ended up pulling it apart. The clutch packs are shot, and the spring washers are broke. I have them ordered and on the way. It really wasn't much to it. Thanks again!!
BINGO! I only use dealerships when I have a warranty, a recall or need tires mounted and balanced. Otherwise it's DIY/phone a friend, or a reputable speed shop or machine shop.
I'm a parts swapper hack and I don't need to pay myself a premium!
Yeap, Who ever u bought it from , they didnt put it back together right they left a part out. Did they tell it was rebuild?? If i missed that part of the thread u can yeah at me.
You didn't get sold a junk diff, you got sold a normal used C5 diff. There are more C5s running around on busted spring washers and roasted clutches than there are with good diffs. As mentioned the burned up LSD won't cause the car not to move. In fact there's nothing that wouldn't be OBVIOUS to any lay person at Wal-Mart that can go wrong with the diff to cause the car not to move. Sounds like a 4L60 problem to me. Lots of reasons why a 4L60 might not actually move the car.

He says he tore it down, so I would think a broken output shaft or spider gear would be fairly obvious. However, it's entirely possible to assemble the carrier with one or no spider gears and have no movement. I figured it's possible if he doesn't have a FSM and know what parts should be in it...
Though the OP didn't specify that it moved prior to the diff swap, another possibility is the trans output shaft is broken or the rear planetary splines are completely wiped out.
