Ok.....I seem to have failed at one lesson and that is the TC. I am installing the 3.42 Differential in my Auto coupe. I need to decide if I should change the TC at the same time. So please, tell me "valid" facts about the change, and please ring in if you did a change in carrier and left the factory TC alone. (The car is driven daily and sees the Highway each day for hour)
I dont even know the factory size, or stall.....
It would be in your best interest to install a TC at the same time you swap the gears. This will save you some installation $$.
You don't have to change the TC, but you'll certainly notice a performance difference if you do.
Determining which TC to get will depend on how you drive (drag, hwy) aqnd future mod plans. It seems that the vast majority here have and really like the SY3500. Since I plan on going the FI route, I'm limited to either the 2800 or 3000.
My 'vette will go in to Speed Demon in about a week and half for 3.42 gears and Vig 2800.
Since you have the A4, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the Trans Go shift kit and B&M tranny cooler installed as well.
If you want the full benifit of using the 3:42 gears with the A4 then install the SY3500 at the same time. Labor should be in the neighborhood of $500 for both. And the SY3500 is the most street friendly for the daily driver. If you have drag racing in mind then go for the ST3500. Don't forget to LS1 edit or powerloader, etc for the shift points and speedometer corrections. I took the plunge and went with the SY3500/3:73 and no regerts here very streetable no looseness. Good Luck.
From a cost and value perspective, you would be foolish not to install both if you plan on getting the best performance. You must however, decide on what your "total package" will be at the end of your mods, or you will purchase the wrong converter. My car is a primary street car, and I have an easier time with the 4000 Precision then I did with my lower stall speed units. This would be foolish however if you don' t plan on major mods later, or frequent drag strip runs.
I have an A4 and upgraded to 3:42's w/o putting in a T/C - I think it runs sweet w/o the T/C ... seems about 1/2 put in a T/C & 1/2 do not, according to my tuner ..
If you want the full benifit of using the 3:42 gears with the A4 then install the (a higher stall TC) at the same time.
Agreed.
You do not have to change the TC... your 3.42's will work just fine with the factory convertor. But you gain more benefit with launching when using a higher stall TC.
Ok....I am still in the dark and need TC for idiots. A TC obviously converts Torque from Engine through Tranny to the Rear Wheels ?? What does stall speed, size and other figures mean.
Also what type is going to provide the same "normal" driving patterns and feeling as the stock one ?? My car with not likely see the track.....what is the stock unit ??

If you are going to change your converter, that would be the time to do it. The question is 1) do you want/need to change your converter and if so 1') to what? You can't answer that w/o knowing what you want out of your CAR and indirectly your converter (and how likely that is to change in the near/distant future.) Do NOT simply go buy a Mega Blaster 8000 just because your internet buddy did. ;)
I'll go rummage around and see if I can come up with some links to general TC info. Maybe somebody can save me some time and beat me to the punch. :D Yank's site has some good stuff, but it kind of assumes you already know converter basics. There are some things it doesn't talk about. ;)
also anything by ToplessTexan on the forum is helpful.
Feeling of a converter is subjective. What might feel stock like to me might not feel stock like to someone else. Also guys with converters in their cars now over a year may have forgotten what stock feels like.
Your last order of feeling stock like and not a track car then you are talking about a very low stall 2400 possible. I think stock stalls at 1500 or so.
Be forewarned that Raughammer is a Yank disciple. Ignore that for the moment and go for the real info. It's also worth searching in the Drivetrain forum over there.
