I started in May taking my T56 apart to rebuild it. I was in no big hurry to get it done I have a spare that I put in the car. At my last hillclimb the Torque Tube had a major failure. I figured since I now have every thing pulled apart AGAIN to replace the Tube, I might as well put in the trans I'm rebuilding now.
If you have seen any videos on rebuilding the T56 one thing you will hear over and over again is when you disassemble the trans lay the parts out in the order they came off that way you know the order they go back on, and I did just that. What I did not plan on was the cart I had everything on getting knock over, I've figured out the order for every thing but one piece.
I believe this spacer/shim goes on the main shaft between the 3rd gear and the 3-4 synchro's any one know for sure if that's where it goes or any other ideas?
You can't go by the Tremec manual It's based on I believe the F body T56 so not all the instructions/illustrations are correct for the C5.
I do not recall where I got this, but it certainly looks directly associated with the C5 T56, disassembly steps, but may have the shim in its 13 pages.
Also this is the full T56 manual: https://www.tremec.com/anexos/TRSM_T56_0711.pdf
Looks like there are 4 "spacers" in the T56. You can do a CTRL-F to search through the manual for "spacer" and see which of those locations would best fit the spacer in question.
Ok since I have both trans out of the car I took apart the spare one as a guide/model for the one I'm building. The spacer does go where I thought between 3rd gear and 3/4 hub. That is if the spare trans has been assembled correctly, I can tell the spare has been apart before and so far I have found one clip ring that was in the wrong place.
MetalMan2,Thanks I have that one already as well as the one that that looks just like it on the reverse gear. I also printed the Tremec manual before I started this cluster ####
redzg, Thanks, I will be using that as a reference as well.
When I assembled the main shaft with out that spacer in place the 3rd gear synchros just flopped around so that told me that the spacer most probably went there.
I had to change the main shaft small bearing so that meant I had to shim the main shaft. I had a hell of a time getting repeatable readings with the setup I was using so I decided to make my own mount. It worked great, I highly recommend anyone that need to set there clearances make some thing like this it was rock solid once it was bolted to the case.
