Default Anyone Using Uncoated LT Headers?

Thinking about headers for my 01. I am just not convinced that the money spent is worth it. Someone must be running uncoated and lived to tell about it.

Its money very well spent. I have seen few sets of uncoated headers and after a few thousand miles they look like crap. Trust me, get either stainless or coated. :seeya :seeya

Stainlessworks headers are all stainless steel and needs no coating. If you have mild steel, insist to have them coated or else they will corrode shortly after you install them.

Sorry Chris, but could you pls explain in more details ? I was always thinking, either plain SS and/or mild-steel, both of them would show some discoloration due to the enormous heat just after the Cylinderheads ? And the coating would just avoid this ?

Do you want to express that discoloration = corrosion ? Now, I am a little confused.

I thank you for some more insight to the side-effects re the "look" of non-coated headers during heat-cycles by a running engine.

Joe.

I have uncoated Stainless Works headers on my car, they look just as good today as the day they were installed by Chris at East Coast Supercharging. I was gonna get them coated, but now that I see that there has been no change in appearance, I am glad I didn't. I saved myself some money. With coated headers, if you get a chip somewhere, they will rust immediately...under warranty most likely, but not worth the hassle.....just my 2 cents

I had stated in my first responce to either get Stainless or coated.. I would not get a steel header that was not coated. They will rust and get blue from the heat pretty quick. :seeya

Something to add here....

You will see some headers advertised that are "stainless" actually being 400 series stainless, which is magnetic, and also rusts like mild steel. Only the 300 series stainless is relatively corrosion-resistant. The stainlessworks is a 304 stainless, and yes, this should hold up against corrosion in the long run.

The SLP headers for example are made of 400 (409 I believe) series stainless, but they are coated. But don't confuse them as being the "last forever stainless" you all think of. If the coating holds up, you should be fine, but their headers rely on the coating to resist corrosion just as much as the mild steel variety like FLP.

Only mentioning this because so many people think it's completely rustproof if "it's stainless", and that's not always the case.

I would get coated whether they were stainless or not because the coated headers run significantly cooler :yesnod:

Bill, I totally agree with you. The coating is just one further strong argument looking heat barrier / heat reduction (and even if it's only by a small margin).

I only was afraid, when installing "nude" SS-Header, they will turn blueish in no time due to tremendeous heat working on them. But may be this is not a real argument........

Thanks for the other comments as well.

Now the only question arises for me (and certainly for countless of others on the same rails as well) : WHAT make / manufacture to buy...........arghhgh. On the other hand : I heard from a valuable source : GHL would appear with a totally new design Headers towards spring. I might have to be a little more patient........:blueangel:

The stainlessworks is a 304 stainless, and yes, this should hold up against corrosion in the long run.
good point....304 is the stuff used for the nuclear portions of the piping in the Naval fleet :D
