Default EBCM Fried!

This looks like one that could be rebuild. It's from a 2000 C5 with a V code.

Wow!! Like my friend once said, "Smoke, once emitted, is hard to reinstall!!!" Sorry to see your problem. I don't think I've ever seen one burned like this!! Looks like brake fluid could've somehow leaked in there......

No contamination at all. Clear day sitting at a light and all of a sudden, a puff of smoke and the burnt electrical smell. I thought it was someone else till the dash lights came on and Service ABS messages appeared in DIC. Never seen one just burn up like that. FYI, all case bolts were only snug, not tight.

FWIW, my 98 did the exact same thing, except it also burnt the entire connector and actually had flames coming from the wire bundle. These cars (maybe just mine) seem to find new ways to self destruct. A junkyard EBCM and harness (with lots of splicing fun!)... then brake lines born to cross-thread later and its running (with all kinds of codes). But it sat for 3yrs...

Before this happened i was chasing the mother of all parasitic drains. Hey maybe i got lucky and it was the "as yet unkown shorting EBCM" causing my drain.

Id never be that lucky.

Default Update

Let me first say I love the smoke in a jar! 🤣 I was lucky enough to find a local guy with a V code EBCM and a harness and perfect connector 'cause mine melted. He said he didn't know the condition of the EBCM since it was removed from a flood car but I got them both for 450. and since I couldn't find a harness, I went for it. After splicing in the harness and putting everything together I fired it up and Wola! EMCB worked! But, now I have another problem. A couple of weeks later the alarm (horn honking) went off. My roommate cycled the ignition key and it stopped (Iwas out of town) When I got home I went to check it out and found the car wouldn't start. I thought maybe the security system had it locked out so I disconnected the battery for 45 minutes and she fired up when reconnect. I thought, problem solved! Nope. Went to take she out for a ride and she wouldn't start again. Battery good voltage good so I start nosein around. I wound up running a jumper wire from the TDR yellow/black wire to ground and she starts every time. However, now the radio turns on when I put the key in the ignition, just in, not turned to accessory, just in. I'm like, WTF? But we're trying to buy a property in NC so I haven't had time to get 'er done. Any advice would be helpful but I'll update the thread when resolved. Thanks y'all!

Let us know, it sounds like there's problems with the BCM as it provides the ground to the TDR, and controls power when the key is inserted and turned.

When you have a no start condtion try to measure if you have battery voltage on the purple wire from TDR relay in passenger footwell .
If yes , your starter/startersolonoid may need replacement ( if the relay operates properly).

I did pull the BCM and checked for water intrusion but it was dry. I'll check the purple wire for voltage later this week, if it stops raining and post findings! 🌧 gotta love South Florida

I see you said you installed the BCM, but did you do the relearn procedure for the key? Are there any codes when you get the no start.

The event happened prior to unplugging the BCM. I plugged it back in and no new issues so, no, no relearn procedure was done.

@C5 Diag

This guy is also in FL, and may be able to help.

I think he’s a couple hours away; Cape Coral.

PS...
Let me add one though about why the EBCM fried. I noticed when I opened it up, the screws weren't very tight. About a month before, I went through the engine replacing everything except pistons, rings and bearings. New mounts oil pump chain & gears cam TS heads headers intake injectors on and on and on balancer belts hoses compressor.... you get the idea $$🐂I also cleaned all grounds and repaired a brittle injector harness. Pulled the PCM and sent to Pat for a startup program, the took it for a dyno tune. (no so happy with the tune or im sorry, calibration. took it back 4 times and its still not right so I won't be mentioning his name) Anyway, most likely water/moisture got inside and thats what fried it.
Everybody should check to see if they've got a screw loose!🤪
