Default Grease everywhere - From what???

I cleaned my car recently and ruined a wheel brush with grease. When I put things back together I noticed a glob on the E-Brake / ABS wire. Wiped it off, didn't think much of it. Today, luckily, I noticed a HUGE amount on the Barrel of the wheel. Took it off and found all this. There is A LOT of grease. Do y'all think it's from the CV Joint? It only spewed it in one area - a big blob. There is no apparent cut / slice in the boot. It is actually in nice shape.
I have no clue. It's pretty clean now - I will drive it and see if more shows up.

Thanks for any help!!

The location and spray pattern definitely coincides with grease ejection from the outer CV boot. Time to pull the axle, not too bad of a DIY job.

The greenish tint is a big tell. Probably a hole in the CV boot.

Thanks for the replies - I guess I can 'like' the answer but I really don't like the answer. I'll put it up and look at the rubber closely. It might be at the very end - right next to the Caliper. I had high hopes of driving the car to Woodward (400 Mi) tomorrow. This doesn't seem likely. unless I get REAL lucky.

Ahhh that's most unfortunate. With all that grease loss plus future (expected) grease loss, the outer CV joint may become starved for grease and start wearing excessively.

Swapping an axle ought to be pretty quick, if you have time in the midst of your trip preparations. See if a local Autozone has an axle in-stock for a quick swap: https://www.autozone.com/drivetrain/...03n/401572_0_0 My local Autozone coincidentally has this in-stock. Also, my '01 Z06 has been running a Duralast axle for the last 5k miles and almost 2 years... so far so good. It was only meant to be temporary until I re-booted my original axle.

Thanks Metal
My car is a late 03 Z - and has a power adder. I just got it running and working on the tune. I have a dual disc clutch, all the parts for C6 Guts in a C5 Diff and T-Tube Rebuild parts all in a cabinet. That WAS to be a winter project.
I was going to see if there is a stronger axle when I did all the Back Half stuff. Do you know of a stronger one? I usually but this type of things from RA. Or just get a new one - and the seals that go with the repair. I still want to find the hole / slice / tear.
It must have been like a Grease **** movie. Just one big shot. I drove it after cleaning it all up and there's no more coming out - must have blown the load... So to speak.
1 step forward, 2 steps back. NOT unusual here.
Thanks again

Looks like a C/V joint throwing grease to me.

I haven't looked into stronger axles but have seen that they exist (just don't remember where). They won't be cheap!

Definitely risky to drive on it if there's no extra grease left! Might be okay if you take it easy on the car and will replace the axle(s) soon anyways.

Already ordered them - Diff Seals too. Both sides.
Thanks for all the help.
The forum structure seems to like to give you a 'similar thread' at the end. I saw one from 2013 with the same pics and struggle that I have (I should have searched?). One of the comments was that the grease is impossible to clean I can vouch for THAT. It took me 20 min to scrub it off my hands. Hi quality stuff - and nasty!!

IIRC, C6 axles interchange with C5s. I know some of the higher powered C6 drag cars try to run C5 axles, because they're a bit weaker, and tend to be a fusible link in the drivetrain. If the C5 axles work in a C6, it would seem a C6 would work in a C5. BUT-I'd refrain from doing that, for the reason I stated above. Sucks it happened just before the Dream Cruise, but where there's a will.......

Thanks Grinder
I looked it all up. The axle is the same part # from 97->13. Except for the C6 Hot Rods (Z06 & ZR1) - those use a different spline count which means changing a bunch of stuff in the Diff, etc, etc. Nope!
The kit to Re-Boot ONE end of the axle is $46 and a whole NEW axle is $59 - No Brainer there! I got diff seals too. Will be here Tue.
My goal was Woodward and Corvettes @ Carlisle - back to back weekends. I might make Carlisle if I get lucky. The car has developed a 'belt squeal' once warmed up but I can't find it - yet. Still might drive to Woodward today - wasn't leaving till noon anyway. My G8 GXP is definitely Woodward worthy and I get to hang out with my Son, Brother in Law and a bunch of Car Guys. Tough decision...

No, I ain't left yet - Seems like I always have 10 things to do and time to do 4 of em.
Weather was a concern in MoTown so I stayed home. The 'Belt Squeal' seems to be more than something simple - took some time to chase it down - still not sure but it doesn't seem like an easy fix. I'll make another post about it - I am totally lost and it is LOUD!
Thanks for all yinz (Go Stillers) do.
