I recently ( about a week ago) purchased a 2001 C5 Coupe. The previous owner kept it in absolute showroom condition but didn't drive it very much - (Just over 5,000 miles since he took delivery in July of 2001. The problem I'm having is that the battery (original delco) doesn't seem to hold a charge. If I leave the radio or lights on for more than a minute or so, the battery will not crank the engine. I am tempted to replace the battery myself, but thought I'd ask on the forum if such an early battery failure was common, and if by replacing it myself, I would have any problems as far as the security system or other electronics. I have charged the battery several times, and the battery indicated a full charge, but fails after a few minutes of radio or lights without the engine running. When the engine is running, meter shows a normal charge rate. Any thoughts?? Thanks! :nonod:
Sure sounds like a bad battery to me. I would check to see if it's still under warantee, maybe you can get a replacement from the dealer. If you chnage it on your own, you should not have a problem if you don't take too long but just to be sure, if you use your radio lock, make sure you know the code. You can also buy a little battery that plugs into your cigarette lighter that should hold all the presets. If you do get a new battery I would go with a Optima Red (or Yellow) Top, but I'm sure some of the other forum members may have some other suggestions. Good Luck..............
Try an get a new one under the warranty .
If they are going to give you a new one be sure it is a 78p or 75p I am not sure what size you have.
These are AC DELCO GLASMATT batteries Good luck.............
Sounds like the battery.. You should go for the red top optima. They don't leak like the stock ones do and they usually last longer than conventional batteries. There are several places that carry these now.
The stock battery has a problem where it leaks from the posts and drips acid on the wiring and ECM. Best to get one that won't leak

It would be pretty silly to spend any of your own money on a battery, considering that you have a 2001. My advice is to take it to the dealership to have them check it out. If the battery is bad, make certain that it is replaced with an ACDelco AGM battery. These batteries are leak and vibrationproof and are factory equipment on 2001s (at least late-model) and newer C5s.
I agree. If you can get a new one under warranty and save some money that's fine. I had the same deal with the battery on my 2000. It wasn't holding a charge very long, but it wasn't a bad as yours. I just went to a Forum vendor, LAPD, and ordered an Optima yellow top. My car can sit a long time without being used. Plus I sprung for a battery tender for winter storage. It was like $55. I had no problem changing the battery. Codes stayed the same. It was a simple do-it-yourself swap.
Re: New C5 Owner - Need Battery Advice!! (Liberty2000)
OK.. didn't know the battery was updated and the leaking problem resolved.
I too would get the dealer to get a replacement.
In my 99, I changed the battery before it had a chance to leak.
Hmmmm... if GM can resolve the battery issue, maybe there is hope for the column lock....
Nah...

If you plan to go to the dealer you should understand if the battery warrantee is transferable from the original owner? If it is transferable, and they honor it you will still have to pay a prorated charge.
I'd skip the hassle and just go buy a new one (Optima or Delco AGM) which ever suites your fancey.
Re: New C5 Owner - Need Battery Advice!! (blktie8)
I have a 2001 Coupe, had dead battery problem last week. My battery has markings saying "Replacement Model 75P-7YR" and "Catalogue# 2277". Is this the correct battery for a 2001? Some folks on the forum said a AGM battery should have a Gray casing, my battery casing looks black to me. Before I raise caine with my dealer about having the wrong battery(non AGM) I would appreciate advice...Thanks.
Re: New C5 Owner - Need Battery Advice!! (RED Coupe)
I believe the change to an AGM battery - AC-Delco Professional Platinum - was made somewhat late in the 2001 model year. If your car was built after the running change that is the battery you'll have (yes, the case is dark grey). An early '01 will have the conventional flooded-cell AC-Delco Professional which is black. It sounds like you have the latter.
If your dealer offers you an Platinum as a warranty replacement, great; but I wouldn't count on it. If it was me, I'd still install an AGM even if it came out of my own pocket. When I had my '99, I put an Optima Red Top in it even though the OEM Delco was still working properly - there was no way I was willing to risk the possibility of it leaking acid all over the PCM.

This is not true. My 2001 is sequence number 745 and has the AGM battery.
Don't take anything to the dealer...Take the hit and buy a new OPTIMA battery. It will last longer than you or the car! Dealers cannot be trusted..they are in business for one purpose...to take you money...as much as they can...as fast as they can!
I agree. When my wheels were stolen, my car sat for 2 months and the battery died. I swapped it out with the Optima red top from Costco for $99. Fits perfect, simple replacement, full charge. If my voltage drops down in the 10s when it's sitting, my alarm goes crazy. That won't happen any more with the Optima.

Thanks very much for confirming I have an AGM battery. Should I be insisting that my dealer replace it with something ther than the 75P-7YR thats there now. By the way, my 2001 Coupe was built 6/2000 and I bought new from the dealer on 8/2000.
