Default HVAC Temp Control Question

The temp control on my ‘04 is not working properly. The readout goes to max and will only come down if I move the **** very slowly. Do I need a rebuilt module…. of is there simple fix?

There is a very old factory service post in Corvette Action Center which indicates that some C5 computers get confused by rapid movement of the temp ****. Not sure which computer, the HVAC module in the dash or the body control module in the passenger footwell.

I experienced a similar symptom about 13 years ago when I could get no heat unless I rotated the temp **** slowly. Since then that is what I do and that method has worked fine since then.

Thx for the response. So the problem is not actually in the HVAC unit itself?

If anyone else had some insight on this problem I’d love to hear from you.

An easy fix is to remove the module and check the PCB for cold solder joints. This is common on C5 electronics. Might take care of the problem at no cost.

Great advice. I’ll give it a shot. Thx.

I'd test the pot and then trace it back from there. However most people probably don't know or don't want to go through the hassle. I haven't looked at that particular part in the unit so I can't speak on the ease of it.

I’m no electronic tech, so don’t really know how to go about it. Is there a repair shop somewhere that could diagnose and repair?

I'm speaking in extreme generalities here. For the most part component level repairs is a dying trade and it's generally not worth the money. If you were talking about a $1000 item, then spending the money might be worth it. If you're talking about a $200 item, then it might not be worth it. The "easiest" course of action is the old "bad by swap" method. Find a local C5 owner and swap units to narrow down the problem. If the problem persists, then clearly it's not the unit. If the problem is solved, then it's within the unit itself. At that point you could buy a new [used] unit, find a controller that is externally physically damaged and swap internals or pay someone to repair it.

It may be something as simple as a $10 pot, which [in theory] should be easy to replace or it might be something else on the PCB which would be harder [or impossible] to replace/repair. To pay someone else to diagnose the problem... ultimately might not be worth it. It depends on how much they charge you to diagnose the problem. Also if they diagnose the problem, they might be able to repair it [parts availability for example].
