Yepper....
This is the 2nd CC941 valve spring that has broken on my Z. :yesnod:
Installed height etc. has nothing to do with the problem because Katech
Balance and blue Printed the engine with new Heads.
The springs simply don't fit the application...
The guys at Katech are going to send me a complete set of CC918 springs
free of charge...now all I have to do is install them
The CC941, I'm being told is still a great spring for other applications,
The 7L C5R for example...Just not my engine / cam setup.
Katech is sugesting the CC918 for my cam...
Emailed questions to CompCam concerning 941 breakages for my application...
The reply:
"Douglas,
There probably isn't anything wrong with the 941 valve spring, but sometimes with an aggressive lobe with alot of lift a single valve spring does get "overworked" to the point of breakage. The 26918 spring is designed for a more aggressive lobe and works with lifts up to .600 lift and is very stable to that point. The only downfall to using the 26918 spring in your application is that the retainer for the 941 spring will not fit the 26918 spring. "
:seeya
We have a set of heads in the shop from a customer that had the 941's. The customer had a broken spring... and the valve dropped enough to slap the piston. When we disassembled the heads that particular spring was in 4 different pieces. The dampner was in 2 pieces... with part of it hanging out... making me wonder if the intial failure was the dampner. We also found 4 more busted springs. Upon closer examination we found that there was severe wear on the underside of all the Titanium retainers... from the dampners. My thoughts are I wonder if the spring/dampner/retainer were ever properly matched... with the spring itself receiving the bad rap because a dampner busted, for one reason or another, taking out the spring when it got inbetween the spring coils?... just a thought.
Nice to hear you are being taken care of... I take it the broken spring caused no other damage?

Stay away from those springs. Go with Comp 987 Duals. The 941s have a horrible record for breaking :(
:iagree:
Go with a dual spring setup Rev 1116 dual springs will fit your heads without the heads being machined. If memory serves they are good up to a cam with .620 lift. As mentioned above Comp 987 Duals are also a good choice, but I believe the heads have to be machined.
Guess I was lucky 2 times in a row...the springs broke just after start up and no other damage....the 1st time Katech actually tore the engine down completly to inspect...2nd time just replaced the broken CC941 with another CC941. Hopefully within a few days Katech will ship me the CC918 and that will be the end of spring breakage :hurray:
The titanium retainers etc. looked fine...
The Engine was running 100% Then right after start up...crap...
Actually...when the springs broke both times, it was just a small misfire...but very obvious, Like a fouled plug....wouldn't sugest driving it very far. :seeya
A compression test on the cylinder flat lined
Received the CC918 springs and installed them today
Sounds and runs great...
Installed height, Max crush etc looked pretty good.
Ran the engine up to temp and let cool down not to exceed 2000 RPM a couple of times as sugested...everything to the book.
Now....please no more broken springs :steering:
