Why do colder temperatures cause the pull key wait 10 seconds message? All last winter until about April, I had that message everytime I started my car once a week. Since April until today I did not get that message one single time. I post this hoping someone might have some explanation, insight. I do not want advice such as installing a column lock bypass.
I will check battery voltage to see if there is any correlation to pull key message from now on. I am thinking that retraction of the steering wheel pin is taking a little longer in cold weather also, and no to LMC5 as my car is a M6, and I like the added security of a functional locking steering wheel.
So I fully charged my battery yesterday, measured 12.5 volts across the battery terminals this morning, and low and behold pull key message when I went to start it. I am now convinced that the mechanism that unlocks the steering wheel takes a little longer to retract and that is causing the message, I should mention that it sounds different now that the temperatures have dropped.
Mmartinez- you should find this thread/sticky interesting. No need to attempt to dig into this issue in attempt to discover something that's been a well known and highly documented issue for the C5 the last 18+ years. The below link is pre LMC5 and refers to all GM attempted recalls and cites most causes..
The recommendations above are the best options you have at this point. With the LMC5 being the best option to solve for this. If locking your steering wheel is a must for you get the LMC5 and buy a "club".
Getting stranded and needing a tow may not be concern enough for you. But the potential of your steering wheel locking up at speed likely is.
Original owner of my '99 coupe and I've had all GM recalls and fixes done on my MN6. Including the locking plate removal (which was done on A4s). Even with a charged battery I would run into the "pull key" issue over the years. I installed the LMC5 with Brown Wire Mod and it's been error free since.
Yeah mine had the locking plates recall performed as well steering column stays unlocked. I installed LCM5 and then it did the same thing except read "steering column locked" and fuel cut. I went ahead and had the tuner raise the vss fuel cut under column lock to 200mph so i can keep driving one time with the pull key wait 10 seconds the whole drive. Does yours cut off or get the fuel cut with pull key wait 10 seconds and column lock? Having the column lock on hwy is dangerous if it were to act up and lock the steering wheel.
My 97m6 only has the GM 2 mph fuel shut off, and yes if you attempt to drive and haven't pulled the key it will shut off. I never receive service column message, and my pull key message only happens when overnight temperatures drop in the 30's. The steering wheel locking on the highway is a myth. I am going to continue trying to find the actual cause of my cars pull key message by parking it in the garage, it normally sits outside under a car port.

Unfortunately "steering wheel locking on the highway is a myth" is not a myth.
It recently happened to one of the active members on this site. There are also occurrences documented (on this site) of steering wheels locking while driving (car moving) in foward or reverse.

The Irish have built a culture on "scheming against the inevitable."
Parked my car in the garage last night and low and behold no pull key message when I went to start it this morning, I am going to alternate parking it in garage and leaving it outside to verify repeatedly, my theory being that cold weather slows down the retracting mechanism and the BCM sets the pull key message because the time is too great between the retracting command and the status coming back to the BCM thst it is unlocked.

Have you removed and checked the CL Relay above the BCM…you may find some corrosion there.

If your theory is true. What are you going to do about it?
My car is a 1997, I have researched this in the past and verified that only the TDR sits above the BCM, my column lock relay is located within the BCM.
Yes, that is what I am thinking, I am going to continue parking it inside and outside and confirm that the pull key message will always happen when left outside. After confirming this I will probably be taking my steering column apart.

I wonder if you will be able to get one of these new. There are used ones out there but you never know if they are good. My two cents, if someone wants to steal your car they will. They can pick it up with a tow truck in about 30 seconds. Better to add a fuel cutoff or something like that to make your car unable to be started so casual thieves can't steal it.
Yes I know if someone wants to steal your car there's nothing you can do to prevent it, however with a m6 car and a bypassed column lock it makes it way easier. I may pull my steering wheel off and get to the retractor mechanism latter on, for now I will simply pull the key and wait 10 seconds, as long as I don't get the service column message. Come next spring the pull key message wouldn't happen.
Update: Have this last few days verified that my pull key message will always happen when my 97 is left outside. I can hear the distinctive difference in the sound the colum unlock mechanism makes when it unlocks the steering wheel. I am posting this so other owners will know that this is also another cause of the pull key wait ten years message. I will relay back at a latter time after I pull my steering wheel off and get at the unlocking mechanism.
Newbie here so greetings to all. So, I installed the LMC5 today for the whole pull key .thing and of course I F%^&ed it up and pulled the 2nd orange wire while my push tool was in the 1st notch. I was able to reinsert the 2nd wire but it can be pulled out since I broke the lock tab. My question is should I be worried and is there a diagram somewhere that states what this 2nd orange wire is for, or maybe someone here knows? Im an idiot.
