Trans Go Shift Kits - Which One
Looking at Summit and the Trans Go website I see there are about three levels of kits.
My question is....which one and what is the difference? I want a snappy shift but I don't want to break the transmission or overrev all the time but want the shift improvement I read about with the ability to fully manually shift through 1st, 2nd and 3rd with D (overdrive) maintaining normal full automatic shifting.
Here are the kits..
☆I have a 2000 C5 Vert.
☆My 4L60E is now 23 years old, over 130,000 trouble free miles.
☆It is totally stock inside.
☆I've made at least 50 dragstrip runs with it.
☆The only service ever done to it was a fluid and filter change at 100,000 miles, which I did myself, nothing in the pan but red fluid.
☆NOW-the interesting part. Theres been an LS7 engine in it with over 600 crankshaft horsepower for the last 17 years/70,000 miles.
Theres been a 3,200 rpm Yank stall converter in it for 17 years/70,000 miles.
I have a friend who rebuilds 700R4s, 4L60s, and 4L60E transmissions. He's pretty good at it, too, if I do say so myself. He's told me that at least 1/3-1/2 the transmissions he rebuilds in Fbodies and C5 Corvettes have had shift kits and/or torque management removed by a tuner. He told me that when a trans has had both a shift kit installed, AND torque management removed, it's a 1-2 kiss of death for a STOCK INTERNALS 4L60E transmission! I'm not a trans guy, but do understand how they basically work. I did see what my tuner did, and listened to what he said. He didn't REMOVE torque management, but he dramatically RAISED the value. Stock was about 450-460ft lbs. He raised it to like 1,000ft/lbs, if I remember correctly (it's been 17 years!), shortened the shift time that it takes when going from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd (drive), and 3rd to OD. I think he also raised line pressure SLIGHTLY. You can do a lot today just by reprogramming the PCM. I hope this helps you. IDK, my tuner must've done something right, or my trans would've been toast long ago.....
It is likely that your car will need a reprogram of the PCM when going to 3.42 in order for shift points to be correct. My car absolutely did when going from 3.15 to 3.73--otherwise rev limit was hit in 2nd and no shift without lifting.
Modified 4L60E transmissions feature a much stronger sun shell. If the sun shell breaks, the trans has to come out for repair.
